Homeopathic Approach: Homeopathic medicines work by subtly stimulating the body’s natural defenses instead of fighting manifestations of a disease or health problem. A Homeopath recommends a treatment remedy based on each individual’s personal make up, and not just the presenting problem. This includes the individual’s unique physical, mental, and emotional characteristics. This is how the homeopathic approach differs from conventional medicine. Homeopathy treats the patient, not the disease.

History: Homeopathic remedies have been around for centuries. They have been proven to treat a wide range of ailments, many times more effectively than other medicines. Particularly successful have been remedies for pain, pediatric ear infections, influenza, fibromyalgia, arthritis, allergies, asthma, headaches and sinus problems. Homeopathic treatments have also proven very effective in treating depression, autism, ADD, and menopausal imbalances. There are even homeopathic veterinarians.

Cost: Homeopathic prescriptions are much less expensive than conventional medicine.

Popularity: As many as a quarter to a fifth of all Europeans use homeopathic medicines. And many European governments provide homeopathic treatment to their citizens, just as they do conventional medicine. Abbreviations Used By Homeopaths: Two abbreviations are used to describe a medicine’s strength or potency. In the United States, the decimal, or x, system is more popular. In Europe, homeopaths use the centisimal, or c, system.

Potency: In both systems, potency is expressed as a number followed by an x or c, such as 3x or 6c. A potency of 1 x means a 1: 10 dilution of the original substance, or one- tenth strength (mix 1 drop of the substance with 9 drops of the dilutant, commonly water or alcohol); 2x means 1: 100, 3x is 1: 1000 and so on. In other words, the number before the x in the decimal system equals the number of zeros in the dilution, so 6x indicates a dilution of 1 part in 1,000,000. A potency of 1c means a 1: 100 dilution. The number before the c means that there are 2 times the number of zeroes in the dilution. For example, 3c means a dilution of 1 part in 1,000,000. (whereas 3x means 1 part in 1,000).

A third scale called millesimal (M) scale is also used by homeopaths. This is denoted by a number followed by the letter M, such as 1M, 2M, etc. A potency of 1M means a dilution of 1 part in 1000. The number before M means that the dilution is 3 times this number. A potency of 2M means a dilution of 1 part in 1,000,000.

How Homeopathic Medicines are Prepared: Homeopathic medicines are not simply diluted. They are also shaken vigorously, or “potentized.” To make a 12x dilution, one drop of the mother tincture is added to 99 drops of the alcohol or water mix and the mixture is shaken vigorously. Then one drop from this mixture is mixed with 99 drops of the dilutant and the mixture is shaken vigorously. The resultant mixture has a dilution of 1 in 10,000 (or 4x). The process is repeated a total of 6 times to get a potency of 12x. Finally, these drops are added to tiny lactose (milk sugar tablets, pillules, granules, or powder and stored in dark colored bottle.

Homeopaths believe that shaking transfers the medicine’s essence to the water used to dilute it. This concept is important because solutions diluted beyond 24x (or 12c) may not contain even a single molecule of the original solution. Homeopaths believe that medicines become stronger as they become more dilute and that even when enormously diluted, the medicine’s “essence” or “energy” remains. Reference

Homoeopathy and Kidney stones: Relief without surgery. Homeopathic remedies are prescribed on the basis of symptoms presented in the sick person. Different individuals, suffering from the same disease, can display entirely different symptoms. At times, a patient may display certain symptoms that are not associated with kidney stones at all.

However, to make it easier to pinpoint the remedies that are most commonly used to treat a particular condition, the symptoms experienced by previous patients are grouped together in the homoeopathic repertory. Symptoms that are commonly experienced by patients who have kidney stones are listed along with the most commonly used medicines that would ease the symptoms.

Common utilized homoeopathic remedies for renal stones:
Aconite - Useful in the acute stage. Urine is scanty, and hot to feel. Urine is at times bloody. Patient perspires profusely. Complaints are aggravated by lying on painful side.

Arnica - Dark brick colored sediment in urine. Painful urination.

Belladonna - Useful remedy when urine is scanty, dark and cloudy, with lots of phosphate stones or when the region over bladder is sensitive. Also used in the treatment of blood in urine.

Berberis vulgaris - Used in the treatment of patients who complain of sensation of some urine remaining after urination, or in those whose urine contains mucus with sediments. Also used in the treatment of bubbling sensation in kidneys, pain in loins and thighs during urination, marked soreness in lumbar region. With pain radiating to the groin

Calcarea carbonicum - Used when patient complains of dark brown colored urine. Urine is often bloody or with white sediments.

Cantharis - This is used when symptoms come on with marked intensity and rapidity. Burning is a marked feature in this remedy. Whole of the urinary system seems to be in an inflammed state. Desire to defecate while urinating is also present.

Colocynthus - Intense burning along urethra when patient passes stools. Hard red crystals in urine, that sticks to vessel. Pain on urinating radiates all over abdomen. Pain is relieved by bending forward.

Nitric acid - Used for renal colic where pain is likened to that of splinters. Urine is scanty, dark and offensive. Typically, urine is strong smelling, like horse urine. At times urine is aluminous.

Lycopodium - Primarily useful in healing right sided complaints. Patient is emaciated from above downwards. The complaints seem to peculiarly aggravate between 4-8 P.M. There are many symptoms pointing to pathology in the kidney. Red sand appears copiously in urine in acute conditions. It is indicated for retention of urine.

Sarsaparilla - Very good remedy that helps during renal colic. Urine is scanty, sandy, often blood tinged. Urine dribbles on sitting. Renal colic in children can be treated with this remedy. Child screams in pain before urination, and there is sand in the child’s diaper. Pain radiates from right kidney into the flanks.

Conclusion: Although we live in an age when quick fixes are the order of the day, more and more people are testing the waters of complementary medicine. This is probably due to the increased awareness regarding the adverse side effects of the long-term use of conventional medicines. Homeopathy not only treats the symptoms of a disease but also tries to root out the underlying cause. All medications in any form or type (for instance, pills, injectables, or homeopathic) and associated supplies (syringes, Sharps disposal container, pre-loaded syringes, jet injectors, pens, infusers, etc.) are allowed through the security checkpoint once they have been screened. Atropens, an auto-injection system that can help treat many emergency conditions (low heart rate, breathing problems, and excess saliva related to insecticide, nerve gas or mushroom poisoning) are also allowed.

We do not require that your medications be labeled.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) migraine inhalers and CO2 refills.

Medications in daily dosage containers are allowed through the checkpoint once they have been screened.

Medication and related supplies are normally X-rayed. However, as a customer service, TSA now allows you the option of requesting a visual inspection of your medication and associated supplies.

* You must request a visual inspection before the screening process begins; otherwise your medications and supplies will undergo X-ray inspection.
* If you would like to take advantage of this option, please have your medication and associated supplies separated from your other property in a separate pouch/bag when you approach the Security Officer at the walk-through metal detector.
* Request the visual inspection and hand your medication pouch/bag to the Security Officer.
* In order to prevent contamination or damage to medication and associated supplies and/or fragile medical materials, you will be asked at the security checkpoint to display, handle, and repack your own medication and associated supplies during the visual inspection process.
* Any medication and/or associated supplies that cannot be cleared visually must be submitted for X-ray screening. If you refuse, you will not be permitted to carry your medications and related supplies into the sterile area.

* Family members or traveling companions can advise Security Officers when they are traveling with someone who has a hidden disability, which may cause that person to move a little slower, become agitated easily and/or need additional assistance.

* Family members or traveling companions can offer suggestions to Security Officers on the best way to approach and deal with the person with a hidden disability, especially when it is necessary to touch the person during a pat-down inspection.

* Family member or traveling companions can stay with the person during a public or private screening; however, they may be required to be rescreened if they provide assistance to the person.

* Notify the Security Officer if you need to sit down before and/or during the screening process.

Pacemakers, Defibrillators, Other Implanted Medical Devices, & Metal Implants

* If you have implanted medical device, that you would like to remain private and confidential, ask the Security Officer to please be discreet when assisting you through the screening process.

* It is recommended (but not required) that individuals with a pacemaker carry a Pacemaker Identification Card (ID) when going through airport security. Show the Security Officer your pacemaker ID, if you have one, and ask the Security Officer to conduct a pat-down inspection rather than having you walk-through the metal detector or be handwanded.

* It is recommended (but not required) that you advise the Security Officer that you have an implanted pacemaker, other implanted medical device, or metal implant and where that implant is located.

* Security Officer will offer you a private screening once it becomes known that you have a metal implant or implanted medical device.

* If your Doctor has indicated that you should not go through the metal detector or be handwanded because it could affect the functionality of your device or the magnetic calibration of your device, or if you are concerned, ask the Security Officer for a pat-down inspection instead.

* Security Officers will need to resolve all alarms associated with metal implants. Most alarms will be able to be resolved during a pat-down, therefore clothing will not be required to be removed or lifted as part of the inspection process.

Medical Oxygen and Respiratory-Related Equipment

Supplemental personal medical oxygen and other respiratory-related equipment and devices (e.g. nebulizer, respirator) are permitted through the screening checkpoint once they have undergone screening.

Any respiratory equipment that cannot be cleared during the inspection process will not be permitted beyond the screening checkpoint.

Persons connected to oxygen:

* Inform the Security Officer if your oxygen supply or other respiratory-related equipment cannot be safely disconnected.
* Only you can disconnect yourself to allow for your oxygen canister/system to be X-rayed.
* Check with your Doctor prior to coming to the checkpoint to ensure disconnection can be done safely.
* If your Doctor has indicated that you cannot be disconnected or if you are concerned, ask the Security Officer for an alternate inspection process while you remain connected to your oxygen source.
* Infants will remain connected to their apnea monitors throughout the screening process. Apnea monitors will be screened while remaining connected to the infant.
* Oxygen equipment will either undergo X-ray screening (only disconnected oxygen equipment) or physical inspection, and explosive trace detection inspection.

Oxygen suppliers or persons carrying oxygen supply:

* An oxygen supplier or personal assistant may accompany you to the gate or meet you at the gate once they have obtained a valid gate pass from the appropriate aircraft operator.
* Persons carrying his/her supply must have a valid boarding pass or valid gate pass to proceed through the security checkpoint.
* Oxygen being carried by the supplier or person will either undergo X-ray screening and explosive trace detection sampling.

Oxygen and Arrangements

Passengers are responsible for making the arrangements with:

* The airline(s) for supplemental Oxygen onboard the aircraft.
* Local providers for oxygen use during any layover stop(s) and at the final destination.
* The airline, friends, relatives or a local supplier for removal of the canister from the originating airport's gate area immediately after you leave the gate area to board the aircraft.

You must make similar arrangements for your return trip. Please, check the procedures outlined below for details. More information on airline accommodations for oxygen users can be found at the National Home Oxygen Patient's Association web site. You can also download the "Airline Travel With Oxygen" brochure. This publication provides valuable information on traveling with oxygen, including airlines that do and do not provide in-flight supplemental oxygen.

When You Make Your Reservation:

Arranging for Supplemental Oxygen (O2) Aboard the Aircraft

* Neither the Air Carrier Access Act nor the Americans with Disabilities Act require airlines to provide oxygen service. Consequently, airline policies, procedures and services on accommodating passengers who use supplemental oxygen vary widely.
* Notify the carrier when you make your reservation that you will need to use supplemental oxygen aboard the aircraft(s).
* Ask about the airline's policies on the use of supplemental O² onboard. Federal regulations prohibit airlines from allowing passengers to bring their own oxygen canisters aboard to use during the flight. Passengers who use oxygen canisters must purchase canisters from the airline for use during the flight. However, some airlines do permit passengers to bring aboard oxygen concentrators, which do not contain oxygen, and use them during the flight. Policies vary from carrier to carrier, so be sure to check with your airline well in advance.
* Keep in mind that not all airlines offer supplemental oxygen service, or may not offer it aboard all their aircraft. Inquire whether: 1) the airline provides oxygen service, 2) it is available on the flights you wish to take, and 3) you must provide a doctor's letter, or permit them to contact your doctor directly to verify your medical need.

Arranging for Supplemental Oxygen during Layovers or at Your Destination

* Notify the carrier(s) you are traveling with that you will need oxygen at the airport(s). Let them know that your O² supplier will be meeting you at the gate with an O² canister.
* Ask about their policy for allowing O² suppliers to meet you at the layover airports and/or at your destination gate.
* Contact your O² supplier and request that they make arrangements for your O² at the city or cities you'll require. The supplier will need to know the airline(s) you'll be using, departure and arrival dates and time, departure and arrival gates, flight number(s), arrival time(s), and the equipment you will need. Make all these arrangements as soon as possible.
* If a representative from the oxygen-providing company is going to meet your flight with an O² canister, arrange for your flight(s) to arrive during the supplier's normal business hours, if possible. Also, have a local phone number and a contact person in the event of any unforeseen situation(s), such as if their representative is not at the arrival gate when you get there.

History: London's Cholera Epidemic

London’s Cholera Epidemic

In 1854 a Cholera Epidemic struck London. This was the first time the
medical community was able to trace the outbreak of an epidemic to one particular source (in this case a public
water pump). By the end of it around 500 people had died.
The House of Commons asked for a report about the various methods that had been used in
treating the epidemic. When the report was issued, the homeopathic
figures were not included. The House of Lords asked for an explanation,
and it was admitted that if the homeopathic figures were to be included
in the report, it would “skew the results.” The suppressed report
revealed that under allopathic care the mortality was 59.2% while under
homeopathic care the mortality was only 9%!

Hi, my name is Steve and I've had herpes for over 16 years. At first I had

Hi, I am 21 years old and I have had a discharge since I can remember ever getting my period for the first time(12years old)which was before I was sexually active. I have also had overy pain since I can remember. Mainly my right overy. It swells up every single night with pain. I have right pain where my overy is every single day since the age of 12.

I have gone to the doctor since I was 16 and they told me that it was probably because of my period cycle, but I would understand this if I would get the pain before or after my period, but every single day, there is not one day when my stomach doesn't hurt.

"Our LORD is the LORD in heavens & skies, Your Name is Holy, Your Order is Firm in the heavens & earth, and as Your Mercy overspreads the skies, please Descend Your Mercy on the earth, & please Forgive our sins & mistakes, You are the LORD of pious people, Send Mercy from Your treasures of Mercy & CURE from Your treasures of CURE on this disease & pain" and if a person recites this Dua, he will be Given the cure.

فى "صحيح مسلم" عن أبى سعيد الخُدْرِى، أنَّ جبريلَ عليه السلام أتى النبىَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال: يا محمدُ ؛ أشتكيْتَ ؟ فقال: "نعم". فقال جبريلُ عليه السلام: "باسمِ اللهِ أَرقيكَ مِن كُلِّ شىءٍ يُؤذيكَ، مِن شَرِّ كُلِّ نفْسٍ أو عَيْن حاسدٍ اللهُ يَشفيكَ، باسمِ اللهِ أرقيكَ".

Muslim narrated that Abu Said Al-Khudri Radi Allaho Anh said that angel Jibreel came to Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam and said to him;

"O Muhammad (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam), are you complaining from an illness?” He said, “Yes". Jibreel then said, ‘In the Name of Allah I say Islamic prayer formulas for your benefit, from every illness that might harm you and from the evil of every evil soul or envious evil eye. Allah Will Cure you; in the Name of Allah I say Islamic prayer formulas for your benefit".

If someone asks, what do you say about the Hadith that Abu Dawood narrated:

رواه أبو داود: "لا رُقيةَ إلا من عَيْنٍ، أو حُمَةٍ"، والحُمَةُ

"There is no Islamic prayer formula except for an evil eye or fever".

To answer this question, we say that the Hadith does not deny that the Islamic prayer formulas can be used in other instances. Rather, the Hadith only states that the Islamic prayer formulas work best for the evil eye and fever of all kinds.

فإنَّ سهل ابن حُنيف قال له لما أصابته العَيْن: أوَ فى الرُّقَى خير ؟ فقال: "لا رُقيةَ إلا فى نَفْسٍ أو حُمَةٍ"

What further attests to this fact is that the Hadith itself narrated that Sahl ibn Hunaif asked Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam (when he was touched by the evil eye), "Do the Islamic prayer formulas bring about benefit"? Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam then answered:

“There is no Islamic prayer formula (that works better) than in the cases of evil eye and the fever.”

وفى "صحيح مسلم" عنه أيضاً:"رخَّص رسولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فى الرُّقية من العَيْن والحُمَةِ والنَّمْلَةِ".

In addition, the various Ahadeeth in general allow Islamic prayer formulas. For instance, Muslim narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam allowed using Islamic prayer formulas in the cases of the evil eye, fever and Namlah (ant’s bite or sores).

ما مَرَرْتُ ليلةَ أُسْرِىَ بى بملإٍ إلا قالُوا: يا محمدُ؛ مُرْ أُمَّتَكَ بِالحِجَامَةِ

نِعْمَ العبدُ الحَجَّامُ يَذْهَبُ بالدَّمِ، وَيُخِفُّ الصُّلْبَ، ويَجْلُو البَصَرَ

إنَّ خَيْرَ ما تَدَاويْتُمْ بِهِ السَّعُوطُ واللَّدُودُ والحِجَامَةُ والمَشِىُّ

Prophet’s Guidance using Honey, Hijamah (Cupping) and Cauterizing as remedies

فى "صحيحِ البخارى": عن سعيد بن جُبيرٍ، عن ابن عباس، عن النَّبِىِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: "الشِّفَاءُ فى ثلاثٍ: شُرْبَةِ عسلٍ، وشَرْطةِ مِحْجَمٍ، وكَيَّةِ نارٍ، وأنا أنْهى أُمَّتى عن الْكَىِّ".

Bukhari narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:

"There is cure in three substances, a drink of honey, incision with a knife used for Hijamah (cupping) and cauterizing by fire. And I forbid my Nation from cauterizing by fire".

Abu Abdullab Al-Maziri said, "Plethoric (excessive substances) conditions are either sanguineous (bloody), bilious (phlegm), or melancholic, and curing sanguineous plethora entails extracting the blood. If plethora was from the other three types, its cure is in softening the stool as warranted for each disease. Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam has indicated that honey is used as a laxative and that cupping is used to extract [septic] blood. Some people said that when the slash by a cupping knife does not work, the last resort is branding by fire (cauterizing). Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam mentioned branding by fire as a last resort when the body has a strong resistance against medicine, rendering it ineffective. Our beloved Prophet then said: "I forbid my Ummah (Muslim Nation) from branding by fire (cauterizing)", and in another narration, "I do not like to be branded by fire". Cauterizing by fire should be the last resort and only used when warranted. The fire should not be the first choice because of the intense pain it causes, which can be more severe than the pain with which a patient is already suffering.

Some doctors said that diseases related to the temperament are either material or non-material. The material types are either cold, hot, wet or dry or a combination of these conditions. The four conditions, hotness and coldness are effected; while the other two, wetness and dryness are usually affected When one of the two effective temperaments is stronger than the other, one of the affected temperaments usually accompanies it. Every type of temperament in the body has two parts, effective and affected.

Temperamental ailments are usually caused by whichever effective condition is stronger, hotness or coldness. Our beloved Prophet’s statement directs us to the origin of ailments, hotness and coldness. If the ailment was hot, the cure entails extracting the blood by cupping or puncturing the veins, both of which help extract the septic matter, cooling the temperament. If the ailment is cold, we treat it with heat, such as by taking honey. If we need to extract the cold material that has caused the ailment, honey helps in this case because it leads the various substances to maturity along with its other qualities of cleansing, softening, soothing and purging the affected organs. In this case, the septic material will be gently extracted while saving the body from the abuse of using strong laxatives.

Physical ailments are either acute, not needing cauterization, because they would soon be neutralized, or chronic ailments, for which cauterizing the proper organ is the best remedy after extracting the septic substances. Chronic diseases usually result from thick, cold septic substances residing in the affected organ, ailing it, spoiling its constitution and, thereby, inflaming the parts of the body that are directly connected to the affected organ. Therefore, cauterizing should be used to dissipate and extract the septic substances in the affected organ with fire.

The Hadith explains treatments for all type of physical ailments, just as we learned the treatment method for all simple ailments (accompanied by fever) from the Hadith,

"إنَّ شدةَ الحُمَّى مِن فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ، فأبرِدُوهَا بالماء"

"The heat of the fever is a breath of the Hell Fire; cool it with water".

Ahadeeth on Hijamah

فى "سنن ابن ماجه" من حديث جُبَارَةَ بن المُغَلِّس وهو ضعيفٌ عن كثير بن سَليم، قال: سَمعتُ أَنَسَ بن مالكٍ يقولُ: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "ما مَرَرْتُ ليلةَ أُسْرِىَ بى بملإٍ إلا قالُوا: يا محمدُ؛ مُرْ أُمَّتَكَ بِالحِجَامَةِ".

As for Hijamah, lbn Majah narrated in his Sunan that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said: "During the night of lsraa (the overnight journey from Makkah to Jerusalem and then to the heavens), every company (of angels) that I passed by would say, "O Muhammad! Order your Ummah (nation) to use Hijamah (wet cupping)".

وفى "الصحيحين" من حديث طَاووس، عن ابن عباس، أنَّ النبىَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم "احتجَمَ وأعْطى الحَجَّامَ أجْرَه"

In addition, in the Sahihain, it is narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam once had his blood cupped (medically) and paid the person who applied the Hijamah (cupping).

Furthermore, in the Sahihain it is narrated:

وفى "الصحيحين" أيضاً، عن حُمَيدٍ الطويل، عن أنس، أنَّ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حجمَهُ أبُو طَيْبَةَ، فأمَرَ لهُ بصَاعينِ مِن طعامٍ، وكلَّمَ مواليهُ، فخفَّفُوا عنهُ مِن ضريبتِهِ، وقال: "خَيْرُ مَا تَدَاويْتمْ بِهِ الْحِجَامَةَ".

Abu Taybah cupped Allah’s Messenger, who then ordered that Abu Taybah be paid one Sa’a (a measure pertaining to food) of dates and ordered his masters to reduce his tax (as he was a slave and had to pay a tax to them). Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam then said:

"Hijamah (Cupping) is among your best remedies".

وفى "جامع الترمذىّ" عن عبَّاد بن منصور، قال: سمِعتُ عِكْرمَةَ يقولُ: "كانَ لابن عباسٍ غِلمةٌ ثلاثةٌ حَجَّامُون، فكانَ اثنَانِ يُغلانِ عليه، وَعَلَى أهلِهِ، وواحدٌ لحجمِهِ، وحجمِ أهلِهِ. قال: وقال ابنُ عباسٍ: قال نبىُّ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: "نِعْمَ العبدُ الحَجَّامُ يَذْهَبُ بالدَّمِ، وَيُخِفُّ الصُّلْبَ، ويَجْلُو البَصَرَ".

In Tirmizi, it is narrated by Abbaad Bin Mansoor that he said: I heard Ikramah saying that Abdullah Ibn Abbas Radi Allaho Anh had three slaves who were Hajjaam (a person who performs cupping), two of them used to work for him & his family (probably at his garden & to carry the grains & load to his house) & one of those slaves performed cupping. Abdullah Ibn Abbas Radi Allaho Anh reported that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said : "The best of slaves is HAJJAAM (one who performs Hijamah ~ wet cupping), Hijamah takes out the blood, & removes the pain from the back & enhances the vision".

وقالَ: "إنَّ خيرَ مَا تحْتَجِمُونَ فيهِ يَوْمَ سَبْعَ عَشْرَةَ، ويَوْمَ تِسْعَ عَشْرَةَ، وَيَوْمَ إحْدَى وَعِشرينَ"، وقال: "إنَّ خَيْرَ ما تَدَاويْتُمْ بِهِ السَّعُوطُ واللَّدُودُ والحِجَامَةُ والمَشِىُّ

Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said "The best dates for Hijamah are 17th, 19th & 21st of the lunar month" and he also said "The best among your treatments is Sa'oot (taking medicine through the nose), Ladood (taking medicine by mouth), Hijamah (Wet Cupping) & Mashee (cleaning the stomach).

The benefits of cupping include cleansing the exterior parts of the body more than puncturing the veins, or puncturing the veins, is better when used to extract blood from the internal parts of the body. Cupping entails removing blood from the various parts of the skin.

Using either Hijamah (cupping) or Fasd (puncturing the veins) depends on the time of year, the area, the age and state of the ailing person. For instance, cupping is more beneficial than puncturing the veins in warm areas, warm weather and hot tempered people, whose blood is near to maturity (concerning the septic substances in the blood). In this case, the septic, maturing blood will collect near the skin. Cupping extracts the septic blood more efficiently than puncturing the veins. This is why using cupping for children and those who cannot bear puncturing the veins is better and more useful.

Doctors affirm that Hijamah (cupping) is better used in warm areas than puncturing the veins and that cupping is preferred in the middle of the month or soon after, especially in the last quarter of the month. In the beginning of the month, the blood will have already become irritated (thus carrying septic materials that need to be cupped). In the end of the month, the blood will be idle, unlike the case in the middle and last quarter of the month when the blood is agitated and sufficiently produced.

The author of Al-Qanoon said; Cupping is not preferred in the beginning of the month, because the body’s various conditions will not be agitated then, nor is it preferred in the end of the month, because by then the conditions would have decreased. Cupping is preferred in the middle of the month when the substances (of the constitution or condition) accumulate and become agitated. It was reported that the Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:

"خَيْرُ ما تداويتم به الحِجَامَة والفَصْدُ

"Cupping and puncturing the veins are your best remedies".

This Hadith is directed at the people of Hijaaz and warm areas in general, for their blood is delicate and circulates closer to the surface of the skin, while the pores on their skin are wide and their strength is weakened (i.e., during summer). Puncturing the veins is harmful for them. Puncturing of each of the veins usually has a special benefit. For instance, puncturing of the basilica vein (the large vein running on the inner side of the upper arm) is useful against the heat of the liver and spleen and various blood-related tumors in these two organs. It is in addition useful for tumors of the lungs (emphysema), arterial pulsation, pleurisy and all blood-related diseases of veins in the lower part of the knee to the hip. Furthermore, puncturing of the median vein helps against the various swellings that appear throughout the entire body, especially when the swelling is blood-related, and contains spoiled blood in general. In addition, puncturing of the arm’s vein helps against the ailments in the head and neck that result from excessive amounts of blood or from septic blood. Puncturing of the jugular vein helps against the ailments of the spleen, asthma, thoracic cavity and forehead pain.

Cupping the upper section of the back helps against the aches of the shoulder and the throat. Further, cupping the two posterior jugular veins helps against the ailments of the head, face, teeth, ears, eyes, nose and throat, if these ailments were caused by excessive presence of blood, soiled blood or both.

Anas Radi Allaho Anh said:

قال أنس رضى الله تعالى عنه: "كان رسولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يحتجمُ فى الأخْدَعَيْن والكَاهِلِ".

"The Messenger of Allah used to apply Hijamah (wet cupping) on Akhda'ain (the two posterior jugular veins) and KAHIL (the upper part of the back). [Abu Dawood, Al-Tirmizi, Ibn Majah, Abmad and Al Hakim].

وفى "الصحيحين" عنه: "كان رسولُ الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يحتجم ثلاثاً: واحدةً على كاهله، واثْنتين على الأخْدَعَيْن

"The Messenger of Allah used to apply Hijamah (wet cupping) on three areas, his upper back area and the two posterior jugular veins". [Bukhari and Muslim].

وفى "الصحيح" عنه: "أنه احتجم وهو محرمٌ فى رأسه لِصداع كان به".

It is narrated in the Sahih that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam used Hijamah (wet cupping) on his head when he was in a state of lhram due to a headache.

وفى "سنن أبى داود" من حديث جابر: "أنَّ النبىَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم احتجم فى وَركه من وثءٍ كان به".

In addition, Abu Dawood narrated that Jabir Radi Allaho Anh said that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam used Hijamah (wet cupping) on his hip because of a debilitation he suffered from.

وفى "سنن ابن ماجه" عن علىّ: "نزل جبريلُ على النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم بحجامة الأخْدَعَيْنِ والكَاهِلِ".

Narrated by Ibn Majah, on the authority of Ali Radi Allaho Anh that angel JIBREEL advised Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam for Hijamah at Akhda'ain (posterior jugulars) and KAHIL (upper back ~ between the shoulders).

Hijamah on the Nape Cavity

Some doctors approved this type of cupping, saying that it helps against exophthalmoses, the abnormal protrusion of the eyeballs, the heaviness in the eyebrows and the eyelids and against eyelid mange. A Hadith states:

وفى حديث آخر: "عليكم بالحِجَامَة فى جَوْزَةِ القَمْحْدُوَةِ، فإنها شفاءٌ من اثْنَيْنِ وسَبْعينَ داءً".

"Use Hijamah (wet cupping) on the nape cavity, for it cures seventy two kinds of ailments".

Further, it was narrated that when Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal needed cupping on the nape cavity, he did it on the two sides of the nape but not on the cavity itself.

The author of Al-Qanun disliked cupping the cavity of the nape saying that it causes forgetfulness just as our Prophet Muhammad has stated. This is because the back of the brain is the location of the memory power and cupping it affects that power.

Other people did not approve of his opinion though, saying that the Hadith that he referred to is not authentic. They said that even if the Hadith is authentic; cupping at the nape weakens the brain if cupping occurs without a necessity that warrants it. When warranted, cupping the nape cavity is medically and religiously useful against the pressure of the blood on the cavity. Authentic narrations have stated that the Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam used cupping in many areas on the back of his neck and in other areas of his body as much as was needed.

Hijamah under the chin helps against toothache, face ailments and throat infections when used at the proper time; it cleanses and purifies the head and the jaws. Further, cupping on top of the foot substitutes for the puncturing of the Saphena, which is a vein on the heel. This kind of cupping helps against the ulcers that occur on the thighs and legs, the interruption of monthly periods and skin irritation on the testicles.

Cupping on the lower part of the chest helps against spots, sores and mange on the thigh. It also helps against gout, hemorrhoids, elephantiasis and itchiness on the back.

When cupping is preferred ?

روى الترمذى فى "جامعه" من حديث ابن عباس يرفعه: "إنَّ خَيْرَ ما تَحتَجِمُون فيه يَوْمُ سابعَ عشَرَةَ، أو تاسِعَ عشرةَ، ويومُ إحْدَى وعِشْرِينَ".

Anas Radi Allaho Anh related from Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam that he said:

"The Messenger of Allah used to have cupping on the jugular veins and the upper part of the back on the seventeenth, nineteenth or twenty-first (day of the month)". (Al Tirmizi)

Anas Radi Allaho related from Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam that he said:

وفى "سنن ابن ماجه" عن أنس مرفوعاً: "مَنْ أراد الحِجَامة فَلْيَتَحَرَّ سَبْعَةَ عَشَرَ، أو تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ، أو إحْدَى وعِشرِينَ، لا يَتَبَيَّغ بأحَدِكُم الدَّمُ، فيقتلَه".

"Those who intend to have cupping; let them do that on the seventeenth, nineteenth or twenty first (of the month); to prevent the septic blood from causing death to one of you". (lbn Majah)

In addition, Abu Dawood narrated that Abu Hurayrah Radi Allaho Anh related from Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam that he said:

وفى "سنن أبى داود" مِن حديث أبى هريرة مرفوعاً: "مَن احْتَجَمَ لِسَبْع عَشْرَةَ، أو تِسْعَ عَشْرَة، أو إحْدَى وعِشْرِينَ، كانَتْ شِفاءً من كلِّ داءٍ"،

"Those who have cupping on the seventeenth, nineteenth or twenty first will be cured from every disease". (Every disease mentioned in the Hadith means the blood-related diseases).

Both of the last two Ahadeeth are weak.

These Ahadeeth conform to the position taken by doctors that cupping is preferred in the latter half of the month and (he third quarter, rather than the beginning or the end of the month. However; if Hijamah is necessary, it will be useful during any part of the month including the beginning and the end. It was reported that Imam Ahmad lbn Hanbal used to practice Hijamah (cupping) during any part of the month when the spoiled blood became agitated.

The author of Al-Qanoon said, "Hijamah / Wet Cupping is preferred during the day, the second or the third hour and after one takes a bath, when warranted, one should take a bath then rest for an hour or so and then use cupping". Cupping is not preferred when the stomach is full, for it might cause various ailments, especially after taking a heavy meal.

It was said that cupping on an empty stomach is a cure, and when ones stomach is full is a disease, and when it is done on the seventeenth of the month, it becomes a remedy. Choosing the best time for cupping preserves good health and helps prevent harm from attacking the body. However, when the illness intensifies, cupping becomes warranted and needed whatever the circumstances, for our beloved Prophet said:

"لا يَتَبَيَّغْ بأحدِكم الدَّمُ فيقتلَهُ"،

"Be aware, so that the septic blood does not cause death to one of you".

We stated before that Imam Ahmad used to take Hijamah during any time of the month if cupping was medically warranted.

As for the best days of the week to have cupping, Al-Khalil said that Imam Ahmad was asked about the days when cupping is not preferred, and he said, "Wednesday and Saturday". In addition, Al-Khalil narrated that Imam Ahmad was once asked about the days when cupping is disliked and Imam Ahmad answered, "Saturday and Wednesday", and in addition Friday was also reported.

However, all the Ahadeeth that state the time when the cupping is either preferred or disliked are weak, according to the scholars of Hadith.

The previous Ahadeeth we mentioned state that seeking the cure by Hijamah instead of Fasd is preferred. In addition, cupping is done in the part of the body that needs it the most. Those who have Ihram (during Hajj or Umrah) are allowed to use cupping, even if it involves cutting some hair and they do not have to pay a penalty. Further, it is allowed for those who are fasting to use cupping as Bokhari narrated that the Messenger of Allah took Hijamah while he was fasting.

There are several Ahadeeth that state that Hijamah breaks the Fast. The only Hadith that appears to contradict this ruling is the Hadith that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam had cupping while fasting. In this case, for the Hadith to mean that cupping does not break the Fast, it should satisfy one of the following four conditions:

First, Fasting should have been obligated by the time the incident in the Hadith [narrated by Al-Khalil above] occurred. Second, it should be proven that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam was not traveling [when he had cupping]. Third, that our beloved Prophet was not suffering from an illness that warranted cupping. Fourth; that this Hadith came after our beloved Prophet said,

"أفطَرَ الحاجِمُ والمحجُومُ".

"Those having cupping and those who do it have both broken their fast".

If these four conditions are satisfied, only then we can say that cupping does not break the fast, relying on the Hadith that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe wasallam took Hijamah when he was fasting. Otherwise, the Fast mentioned in the Hadith might have been a voluntary fast that too is allowed to break when cupping is warranted. Or it could have occurred during Ramadan but while the Prophet was traveling. Or the Hadith might be talking about a compulsory Fast during Ramadan but that it was necessary to have cupping due to an illness. Or, cupping could dove been done during Ramadan and without a necessity that warrants it, but before our beloved Prophet issued his statement that cupping breaks the Fast of those involved in it. There is no proof that any of the four conditions we mentioned above wore satisfied, so how about all four of them?

In addition, the Hadith proves that one is allowed to hire a doctor for a certain purpose and then pay him for his services without a service contract.

The Hadith (that our beloved Prophet paid the person who performed cupping for him) indicates that some people are allowed to make Hijamah (wet cupping) their profession. Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam gave the man who performed cupping some money and that person spent that money on his necessities.

Finally, the Hadith proves that one is allowed to collect reasonable taxes from his slave and that the slave is allowed to use whatever is left after paying the tax. Otherwise, if the master is going to take all the money anyway, it will not be called a tax any more. Therefore, whatever is left with the slave beyond the required tax is his property and he can do whatever he wishes with it.

Prophetic medicine is not similar to that offered by doctors and physicians. Prophetic medicine is indeed the effective treatment and cure provided by the revelation and the guidance of Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam; that is coupled with a sound and perfect mind. In comparison, the majority of remedies prescribed by others are built on hypothesis, observation and experimentation.

It is a fact that many people do not benefit from Prophetic medicine because it will help only those who acknowledge and have faith in it. Abstract

Today is the age of evidenced base medicine. Modern science always trying to disapprove efficacy of homoeopathic medicine in the context of high dilution which is a revolutionary discovery of a great scientist Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Out of all the assertions made by homoeopaths, it is this one on the action of the infinitesimal doses which is utterly rejected by so-called men of science as being impossible.

They point out that in a solution where the solute reaches dilutions beyond Avagadro’s number (6 x 1023; 12C, 24X, 0/4 potencies and above), that the probability of finding even one molecule of the initial substance goes from extremely small, to almost non-existent. The present article tries to explore the journey of the scienificity of homoeopathic doses since from the days of Hahnemann till the present era in a very concise form.

Introduction

“It has been my rule through life never to accept anything as true, unless it came as near mathematical proof as possible in its domain of science; and, on the other hand, never to reject anything as false, unless there was stronger proof of its falsity.” – Constantine Hering. [Preface,The Guiding Symptoms of our Materia Medica]

The Homeopathic mode of treatment often encourages use of drugs at such ultra-low doses and high dilutions that even the physical existence of a single molecule of the original drug substance becomes theoretically impossible. But homeopathy has sustained for over two hundred years despite periodical challenges thrown by scientists and non-believers regarding its scientificity.

There has been a spurt of research activities on homeopathy in recent years, at clinical, physical, chemical, biological and medical levels with acceptable scientific norms and approach. While clinical effects of some homeopathic drugs could be convincingly shown, one of the greatest objections to this science lies in its inability to explain the mechanism of action of the microdoses based on scientific experimentations and proofs.

Though many aspects of the mechanism of action still remain unclear, serious efforts have now been made to understand the molecular mechanism(s) of biological responses to the potentized form of homeopathic drugs. I begin the present article with Hahnemann’s view on the necessity of keeping an open mind, free from bias, and transcendental speculation which can receive no confirmation from experience.

Homoeopathic Potentization

Hahnemann perplexed by the aggravations resulting from the ordinary doses in his daily medical practice, seeked to find a dose so small that it would not endanger the life. Naturally this led him to reduce the size of the doses. Finding better results with this he continued to reduce the dose.
His idea at first was simply to reduce the “strength” / material mass of the drug but his passion for accuracy led him to adopt a scale i.e., Fifty Millesimal scale which he particularly introduced in 6th edition of Organon of Medicine.

In reducing the density of the mass he perceived that he was setting free powers previously latent and that these powers were the greatest and most efficient for their therapeutic purposes when the remedy so prepared was applied under the principle of Symptom Similarity. First he said it merely as dilution but ceased and named it “potentization”, a process of rendering potent / powerful that which was previously impotent.

Now Homoeopathic Potentization or Dynamization is a mathematico-mechanical process, for the reduction, according to scale of crude, inert and poisonous medicinal substances medicinal substances to a state of physical solubility, physiological assimilability, therapeutic activity and to a state of harmlessness for use as a homoeopathic healing remedies.

The aim of potentization is to reduce all substances designed for therapeutic use to a state of approximately perfect solution and complete ionization which is fully accomplished by infinite dilution.

The greater the dilution, the higher the degree of ionization until, at, Infinite dilution ionization is complete and therapeutic activity is conditionally greatest. The procedure of potentization involves division of matter into particles, differentiations and progressions by which reproduction and propagations of medicinal properties of the drug takes place, and power and qualities of the drug are progressively transformed to the diluting medium.

Scientific foundation of potentization:

The use of the infinitesimal dose in Homoeopathy is an outcome of experience, doctrine having foundation in truth and embodied in the modern scientific theories like:-

1. The Conservation of Energy – the sum total of the energy of the Universe neither increaseses nor decreases but assumes different forms successively.
2. The Conservation of Matter – Matter is indestructible and the total quantity of it in Universe remains the same regardless of the innumerable transformation and permutations constantly taking place.

Mathematically no limits can be assigned to the divisibility of matter. The smallest conceivable part always contains some of the original substance along with its power and qualities. Dynamisation is not merely a process of dilution or attenuation that liberates the pharmaco-dynamic properties of a drug but the friction which is given to the drug with the inert vehicle by a process of succussion or trituration.

So dynamisation is a process of dilution plus friction which brings about the unfolding or intensification of the pharmaco dynamic properties of a drug. Thus Hahnemann started the study of pharmacological and therapeutic properties of drugs to a level of energetic where qualities or force is the primary consideration and matter secondary.

Fincke explained the action and efficiency of infinitesimal doses by applying the “Law of the Least Quantity”, discovered by Maupertius, the Great French mathematican. The principle is stated as follows: “the quantity of action necessary to effect any change the nature is the least possible”. Dr. Fincke says, “the decisive amount is always a minimum, an infinitesimal”.

The law of the Least Action (Maxima Minimis) appears to be essential and necessary complement of the Law of Similars (Similia Similibus) and coordinate with it. According to this principle the curative properties and action of the homoeopathic remedy are governed by its preparation and application. The quality of action of the homoeopathic remedy is determined by its quantity.

So the law of the least action is the posological priniciple of Homoeopathy. Homoeopathy was not created by the discovery of the law of Similars. Many before Hahnemann from Hippocrates down, had glimpses of the law and some tried to make use of it therapeutically but failed because of their inability to properly graduate and adapt the dose. The principle of Similia was of no practical use until the related principle of minimum dose and potentization was discovered. So Homoeopathy became most practicable after this discovery.

To the mind of the mathematican, astronomer or modern physicist, accustomed to think in the terms of the infinitesimal, such quantities present no difficulties, but to the unscientific mind, with its crude conception of constitution of matter, they are unthinkable and incredible. Hahnemann by his discovery of potentization raised Homoeopathy to a level with other natural sciences and created a method analogous to the infinitesimal calculus of mathematics, upon which is based the atomic theory of chemistry; harmonizes with ‘the theory of the interatomic ether of space’,
the theory of the radiant state of matter, the theory of the electric potential of the present physics and with the chemico – cellular theory of physiology and pathological anatomy. Its agrees with modern bacteriology in its explanation of the action of pathogenic microbes as being due to the infinitesimal quantities of their secreted poisons.

It is in harmony with the latest conclusion of modern psychology.
Von Grauvogl has shown that the absorption of inorganic substances by the living organism regulates itself chiefly according to the organic need, hence such
Quantities and in soluble form. Iron offers a good illustration.
Vitamins, Minerals essential for our body are required in minute amount, even plants require minerals (present in various manures and fertilizers) in minute amount.

Substances which in their natural state are unassimilable by the living organism like the minerals / toxic / destructive substances are by homoeopathic mechanical potentization rendered soluble homogenous and assimilable, rendered harmless when prescribed homoeopathically.

They become to the diseased organism what food is to the healthy organism, that is reconstructive which supplies the organic need, restore order and harmony to disordered function and permits a resumption of normal functioning.
Practical experience with homoeopathic high potencies in the treatment of the sick confirms the fundamental postulates of science.
The highest potencies made by Hahnemannian process of dilution are shown to be capable of bringing about a curative reaction in the sick when the remedy is homoeopathic to the case. The effect of homoeopathic dose is augumented by increasing the quantity of liquid in which the medicine is dissolved preparatory to its administration.

Today plenty of research works have been done in various streams of science showing the curative efficacy of homoeopathic high dilutions. The internet is loaded with such research papers which need a global acceptance. The idea of potentization is a gradual growth of development. It is at the same time the most vital and most vulnerable part, the very heart of Homoeopathy.

The present era calls for Prospective studies involving homoeopathic experts who believe in and treat as per Classical Homoeopathy, formulating the protocols/ study designs/ methodology, in conformity with the doctrines of Homoeopathy, particularly for the in-vivo studies and undertaking in vitro studies involving the experts of the concerned areas, by adopting Double blind placebo controlled techniques.

Conclusion

Homoeopathy is a precisely structured doctrine. Even though most of its ideas find their parallels in allopathy, it differs from the latter in that the homoeopathic ideas are mutually consistent and coherent. In this discipline medicines may not be prescribed otherwise than in conformity with Hahnemann’s three rules. Homoeopathy science needs more and more exploration of its principal aspects.

Scientific minded, enthusiastic and meticulous homoeopathic physician should take the challenge with great zeal and perseverance to disprove the false blame of modern science and at the same time co-relate and established relationship of modern scientific advancement with the homoeopathic principles. The day is not far when our science will find a universal acceptance with respect to its scientificity with regards to various controversial facets.

A girl aged 16 was suffering from white discoloration of the skin in face, waist, around nipples since three years. The lesion appeared on her left nipple and spreaded to other parts of the body.

The lesions are well defined with lines and the borders with brown areas of demarcation. The affected areas were white, milky in colour. Additionally she had headache < sun exposure with tendency to catch cold easily.

Discussion
The case has been prescribed to the nearing similimum Natrum Mur, but failed to respond. Arsenicum Album was prescribed considering the trio miasmatic base and also the suspected causation insect bite. The miasmatic layer progressively disappeared and improvement sustained until the all lesions disappearing. She had been asked to withdraw her medication and after 7 years her mother reported she was married and has no complaints.

Miasms in practice

The concept of miasm is one among the most controversial topic in homoeopathy. Many state that it is nothing but the microorganisms and few opinions that it is only a dyscrasia and disposition. We also study about the evolution of miasm and the Germ theory of disease is linked in understanding the infectious nature of the disease.

We find difficult to cure a chronic disease, even though a correct similium applied to that particular case. Such cases respond successfully to a follow up prescription which knowingly or unknowingly covering the miasmatic layer.

Hahnemann also faced failures in treating the chronic disease; he was geared to find the solution after 12 years of experiment, contributed the theory of chronic disease. While Paris and London were places of mud streets and hovels, Baghdad, Cairo and Cardboard had hospitals open to both male and female patients; staffed by attendants of both sexes. These medical centers contained libraries pharmacies, the system of interns, externs, and nurses. There were mobile clinics to reach the totally disabled, the disadvantaged and those in remote areas. There were regulations to maintain quality control on drugs.
Pharmacists became licensed professionals and were pledged to follow the physician's prescriptions. Legal measures were taken to prevent doctors from owning or holding stock. in a pharmacy. The extent to which Islamic medicine advanced in the fields of medical education, hospitals, bacteriology, medicine, anesthesia, surgery, pharmacy, ophthalmology, psychotherapy and psychosomatic diseases are presented briefly.

INTRODUCTION

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who is ranked number one by Michael Hart, a Jewish scholar, in his book The 100: The Most Influential Persons in History, was able to unite the Arab tribes who had been tom by revenge, rivalry, and internal fights, and produced a strong nation acquired and ruled simultaneously, the two known empires at that time, namely the Persian and Byzantine Empires.

The Islamic Empire extended from the Atlantic Ocean on the West to the borders of China on the East. Only 80 years after the death of their Prophet, the Muslims crossed to Europe to rule Spain for more than 700 years. The Muslims preserved the cultures of the conquered lands.
However when the Islamic Empire became weak, most of the Islamic contributions in an and science were destroyed. The Mongols bunt Baghdad (1258 A.D.) out of barbarism, and the Spaniards demolished most of the Islamic heritage in Spain out of hatred.

The Islamic Empire for more than 1000 years remained the most advanced and civilized nation in the world. This is because Islam stressed the importance and respect of learning, forbade destruction, developed in Muslims the respect for authority and discipline, and tolerance for other religions.
The Muslims recognized excellence and hungering intellectually, were avid for the wisdom of the world of Galen, Hippocrates, Rufus of Ephesus, Oribasius, Discorides and Paul of Aegina. By the tenth century their zeal and enthusiasm for learning resulted in all essential Greek medical writings being translated into Arabic in Damascus, Cairo, and Baghdad.

Arabic became the International Language of learning and diplomacy. The center of scientific knowledge and activity shifted eastward, and Baghdad emerged as the capital of the scientific world. The Muslims became scientific innovators with originality and productivity. Islamic medicine is one of the most famous and best known facets of Islamic civilization, and in which the Muslims most excelled.

The Muslims were the great torchbearers of international scientific research. They hit the source ball of knowledge over the fence to Europe. In the words of Campbell' "The European medical system is Arabian not only in origin but also in its structure. The Arabs are the intellectual forebears of the Europeans."

The aim of this paper is to prove that the Islamic Medicine was 1000 years ahead of its times. The paper covers areas such as medical education, hospitals, bacteriology, medicine, anesthesia, surgery, ophthalmology, pharmacy, and psychotherapy.

MEDICAL EDUCATION

In 636 A.D., the Persian City of Jundi-Shapur, which originally meant beautiful garden, was conquered by the Muslims with its great university and hospital intact. Later the Islamic medical schools developed on the Jundi-Shapur pattern. Medical education was serious and systematic.

Lectures and clinical sessions included in teaching were based on the apprentice system. The advice given by Ali ibnul-Abbas (Haly Abbas: -994 -A.D.) to medical students is as timely today as it was then'. "And of those things which were incumbent on the student of this art (medicine) are that he should constantly attend the hospitals and sick houses; pay unremitting attention to the conditions and circumstances of their intimates, in company with the most astute professors of medicine, and inquire frequently as to the state of the patients and symptoms apparent in them, bearing in mind what he has read about these variations, and what they indicate of good or evil."

Razi (Rhazes: 841-926 A.D.) advised the medical students while they were seeing a patient to bear in mind the classic symptoms of a disease as given in text books and compare them with what they found (6).

The ablest physicians such as Razi (Al-Rhazes), Ibn-Sina (Avicenna: 980-1037 A.D.) and Ibn Zuhr (Avenzoar: 116 A.D.) performed the duties of both hospital directors and deans of medical schools at the same time. They studied patients and prepared them for student presentation. Clinical reports of cases were written and preserved for teaching'. Registers were maintained.

Training in Basic Sciences

Only Jundi-Shapur or Baghdad had separate schools for studying basic sciences. Candidates for medical study received basic preparation from private tutors through private lectures and self study. In Baghdad anatomy was taught by dissecting the apes, skeletal studies, and didactics.

Other medical schools taught anatomy through lectures and illustrations. Alchemy was once of the prerequisites for admission to medical school. The study of medicinal herbs and pharmacognosy rounded out the basic training. A number of hospitals maintained barbel gardens as a source of drugs for the patients and a means of instruction for the students.

Once the basic training was completed the candidate was admitted as an apprentice to a hospital where, at the beginning, he was assigned in a large group to a young physician for indoctrination, preliminary lectures, and familiarization with library procedures and uses. During this pre-clinical period, most of the lectures were on pharmacology and toxicology and the use of antidotes.

Clinical training: The next step was to give the student full clinical training. During this period students were assigned in small groups to famous physicians and experienced instructors, for ward rounds, discussions, lectures, and reviews. Early in this period therapeutics and pathology were taught.

There was a strong emphasis on clinical instruction and some Muslim physicians contributed brilliant observations that have stood the test of time. As the students progressed in their studies they were exposed more and more to the subjects of diagnosis and judgment. Clinical observation and physical examination were stressed. Students (clinical clerks) were asked to examine a patient and make a diagnosis of the ailment.

Only after an had failed would the professor make the diagnosis himself. While performing physical examination, the students were asked to examine and report six major factors: the patients' actions, excreta, the nature and location of pain, and swelling and effuvia of the body. Also noted was color and feel of the skin- whether hot, cool, moist, dry, flabby. Yellowness in the whites of the eye (jaundice) and whether or not the patient could bend his back (lung disease) was also considered important (8).

After a period of ward instructions, students, were assigned to outpatient areas. After examining the patients they reported their findings to the instructors. After discussion, treatment was decided on and prescribed. Patients who were too ill were admitted as inpatients. The keeping of records for every patient was the responsibility of the students.

Curriculum:
There was a difference in the clinical curriculum of different medical schools in their courses; however the mainstay was usually internal medicine. Emphasis was placed on clarity and brevity in describing a disease and the separation of each entity. Until the time of Ibn Sina the description of meningitis was confused with acute infection accompanied by delirium. Ibn Sina described the symptoms of meningitis with such clarity and brevity that there is very little that can be added after I 000 yearS6.

Surgery was also included in the curriculum. After completing courses, some students specialized under famous specialists. Some others specialized while in clinical training. According to Elgood9 many surgical procedures such as amputation, excision of varicose veins and hemorrhoids were required knowledge.

Orthopedics was widely taught, and the use of plaster of Paris for casts after reduction of fractures was routinely shown to students. This method of treating fractures was rediscovered in the West in 1852. Although ophthalmology was practiced widely, it was not taught regularly in medical schools. Apprenticeship to an eye doctor was the preferred way of specializing in ophthalmology. Surgical treatment of cataract was very common. Obstetrics was left to midwives.

Medical practitioners consulted among themselves and with specialists. Ibn Sina and Hazi both widely practiced and taught psychotherapy. After completing the training, the medical graduate was not ready to enter practice, until he passed the licensure examination. It is important to note that there existed a Scientific Association which had been formed in the hospital of Mayyafariqin to discuss the conditions and diseases of the patients.

Licensing of Physicians: In Baghdad in 931 A.D. Caliph Al-Muqtadir learned that a patient had died as the result of a physician's error. There upon he ordered his chief physician, Sinan-ibn Thabit bin Qurrah to examine all those who practiced the art of healing. In the first year of the decree more than 860 were examined in Baghdad alone.
From that time on, licensing examinations were required and administered in various places. Licensing Boards were set up under a government official called Muhtasib or inspector general . The Muhtasib also inspected weights and measures of traders and pharmacists. Pharmacists were employed as inspectors to inspect drugs and maintain quality control of drugs sold in a pharmacy or apothecary. What the present Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is doing in America today was done in Islamic medicine I 000 years ago.

The chief physician gave oral and practical examinations, and if the young physician was successful, the Muhtasib administered the Hippocratic oath and issued a license. After 1000 years licensing of physicians has been implemented in the West, particularly in America by the State Licensing Board in Medicine. For specialists we have American Board of Medical Specialties such as in Medicine, Surgery, Radiology, etc.

European medical schools followed the pattern set by the Islamic medical schools and even in the early nineteenth century, students at the Sorbonne could not graduate without reading Ibn Sina's Qanun (Cannon). According to Razi a physician had to satisfy two condition for selection: firs0y, he was to be fully conversant with the new and the old medical literature and secondly, he must have worked in a hospital as house physician.

HOSPITALS

The development of efficient hospitals was an outstanding contribution of Islamic medicine (7). Hospitals served all citizens free without any regard to their color, religion, sex, age or social status. The hospitals were run by government and the directors of hospitals were physicians.

Hospitals had separate wards for male patients and female patients. Each ward was furnished with a nursing staff and porters of the sex of the patients to be treated therein. Different diseases such as fever, wounds, infections, mania, eye conditions, cold diseases, diarrhea, and female disorders were allocated different wards. Convalescents had separate sections within them. Hospitals provided patients with unlimited water supply and with bathing facilities.

Only qualified and licensed physicians were allowed by law to practice medicine. The hospitals were teaching hospitals educating medical students. They had housing for students and house-staff. They contained pharmacies dispensing free drugs to patients. Hospitals had their own conference room and expensive libraries containing the most up-to-date books. According to Haddad, the library of the Tulum Hospital which was founded in Cairo in 872 A.D. (I 100 years ago) had 100,000 books.

Universities, cities and hospitals acquired large libraries (Mustansiriyya University in Baghdad contained 80,000 volumes; the library of Cordova 600,000 volumes; that of Cairo 2,000,000 and that of Tripoli 3,000,000 books), physicians had their own extensive personal book collections, at a time when printing was unknown and book editing was done by skilled and specialized scribes putting in long hours of manual labour.

For the first time in history, these hospitals kept records of patients and their medical care.

From the point of view of treatment the hospital was divided into an out- patient department and an inpatient department. The system of the in-patient department differed only slightly from that of today.
At Tulun hospital, on admission the patients were given special apparel while their clothes, money, and valuables were stored until the time of their discharge. On discharge, each patient - received five gold pieces to support himself until he could return to work.

The hospital and medical school at Damascus had elegant rooms and an extensive library. Healthy people are said to have feigned illness in order to enjoy its cuisine. There was a separate hospital in Damascus for lepers, while, in Europe, even six centuries later, condemned lepers were burned to death by royal decree.

The Qayrawan Hospital (built in 830 A.D. in Tunisia) was characterized by spacious separate wards, waiting rooms for visitors and patients, and female nurses from Sudan, an event representing the first use of nursing in Arabic history. The hospital also provided facilities for performing prayers.

The Al-Adudi hospital (built in 981 A.D. in Baghdad) was furnished with die best equipment and supplies known at the time. It had interns, residents, and 24 consultants attending its professional activities, An Abbasid minister, Ali ibn Isa, requested the court physician, Sinan ibn Thabit, to organize regular visiting of prisons by medical officers (14).

It was chiefly in the humaneness of patient care, however, that the hospitals of Islam excelled. Near the wards of those afflicted with fever, fountains cooled the air; the insane were treated with gentleness; and at night music and storytelling soothed the patients.

The Bimaristans (hospitals) were of two types - the fixed and the mobile. The mobile hospitals were transported upon beasts of burden and were erected from time to time as required. The physicians in the mobile clinics were of the same standing as those who served the fixed hospitals.
Similar moving hospitals accompanied the armies in the field. The field hospitals were well equipped with medicaments, instruments, tents and a staff of doctors, nurses, and orderlies. The traveling clinics served the totally disabled, the disadvantaged and those in remote areas. These hospitals were also used by prisoners, and by the general public, particularly in times of epidemics.

BACTERIOLOGY

Al-Razi was asked to choose a site for a new hospital when he came to Baghdad. First he deduced which was the most hygienic area by observing where the fresh pieces of meat he had hung in various parts of the city decomposed least quickly.

Ibn Sina stated explicitly that the bodily secretion is contaminated by foul foreign earthly body before getting the infection. Ibn Khatima stated that man is surrounded by minute bodies which enter the human system and cause disease.

In the middle of the fourteenth century "black death" was ravaging Europe and before which Christians stood helpless, considering it an act of God.

At that time Ibn al Khatib of Granada composed a treatise in the defense of the theory of infection in the following way: To those who say, "How can we admit the possibility of infection while the religious law denies it?" We reply that the existence of contagion is established by experience, investigation, the evidence of the senses and trustworthy reports. These facts constitute a sound argument. The fact of infection becomes clear to the investigator who notices how he who establishes contact with the afflicted gets the disease, whereas he who is not in contact remains safe, and how transmission is effected through garments, vessels and earrings.

Al-Razi wrote the first medical description of smallpox and measles - two important infectious diseases. He described the clinical difference between the two diseases so vividly that nothing since has been added. Ibn Sina suggested the communicable nature of tuberculosis. He is said to have been the first to describe the preparation and properties of sulphuric acid and alcohol. His recommendation of wine as the best dressing for wounds was very popular in medieval practice. However Razi was the first to use silk sutures and alcohol for hemostatis. He was the first to use alcohol as an antiseptic.

ANESTHESIA

Ibn Sina originated the idea of the use of oral anesthetics. He recognized opium as the most powerful mukhadir (an intoxicant or drug). Less powerful anesthetics known were mandragora, poppy, hemlock, hyoscyamus, deadly nightshade (belladonna), lettuce seed, and snow or ice cold water. The Arabs invented the soporific sponge which was the precursor of modem anesthesia. It was a sponge soaked with aromatics and narcotics and held to the patient's nostrils.

The use of anesthesia was one of the reasons for the rise of surgery in the Islamic world to the level of an honourable speciality, while in Europe, surgery was belittled and practiced by barbers and quacks. The Council of Tours in 1163 A.D. declared Surgery is to be abandoned by the schools of medicine and by all decent physicians." Burton stated that "anesthetics have been used in surgery throughout the East for centuries before ether and chloroform became the fashion in civilized West."

SURGERY

Al-Razi is attributed to be the first to use the seton in surgery and animal gut for sutures.

Abu al-Qasim Khalaf Ibn Abbas Al-Zahrawi (930-1013 A.D.) known to the West as Abulcasis, Bucasis or Alzahravius is considered to be the most famous surgeon in Islamic medicine. In his book Al-Tasrif, he described hemophilia for the first time in medical history. The book contains the description and illustration of about 200 surgical instruments many of which were devised by Zahrawi himself.

In it Zahrawi stresses the importance of the study of Anatomy as a fundamental prerequisite to surgery. He advocates the re implantation of a fallen tooth and the use of dental prosthesis carved from cow's bone, an improvement over the wooden dentures worn by the first President of America George Washington seven centuries later.

Zahrawi appears to be the first surgeon in history to use cotton (Arabic word) in surgical dressings in the control of hemorrhage, as padding in the splinting of fractures, as a vaginal padding in fractures of the pubis and in dentistry. He introduced the method for the removal of kidney stones by cutting into the urinary bladder. He was the first to teach the lithotomy position for vaginal operations. He described tracheotomy, distinguished between goiter and cancer of the thyroid, and explained his invention of a cauterizing iron which he also used to control bleeding.
His description of varicose veins stripping, even after ten centuries, is almost like modern surgery. In orthopedic surgery he introduced what is called today Kocher's method of reduction of shoulder dislocation and patelectomy, 1,000 years before Brooke reintroduced it in 1937.

Ibn Sina's description of the surgical treatment of cancer holds true even today after 1,000 years. He says the excision must be wide and bold; all veins running to the tumor must be included in the amputation. Even if this is not sufficient, then the area affected should be cauterized.

The surgeons of Islam practiced three types of surgery: vascular, general, and orthopedic, Ophthalmic surgery was a speciality which was quite distinct both from medicine and surgery. They freely opened the abdomen and drained the peritoneal cavity in the approved modern style. To an unnamed surgeon of Shiraz is attributed the first colostomy operation. Liver abscesses were treated by puncture and exploration.

Surgeons all over the world practice today unknowingly several surgical procedures that Zahrawi introduced 1,000 years ago .

MEDICINE

The most brilliant contribution was made by Al-Razi who differentiated between smallpox and measles, two diseases that were hitherto thought to be one single disease. He is credited with many contributions, which include being the first to describe true distillation, glass retorts and luting, corrosive sublimate, arsenic, copper sulfate, iron sulphate, saltpeter, and borax in the treatment of disease .

He introduced mercury compounds as purgatives (after testing them on monkeys); mercurial ointments and lead ointment." His interest in urology focused on problems involving urination, venereal disease, renal abscess, and renal and vesical calculi. He described hay-fever or allergic rhinitis.

Some of the Arab contributions include the discovery of itch mite of scabies (Ibn Zuhr), anthrax, ankylostoma and the guinea worm by Ibn Sina and sleeping sickness by Qalqashandy. They described abscess of the mediastinum. They understood tuberculosis and pericarditis.

Al Ash'ath demonstrated gastric physiology by pouring water into the mouth of an anesthetized lion and showed the distensibility and movements of the stomach, preceding Beaumont by about 1,000 years" Abu Shal al- Masihi explained that the absorption of food takes place more through the intestines than the stomach. Ibn Zuhr introduced artificial feeding either by gastric tube or by nutrient enema. Using the stomach tube the Arab physicians performed gastric lavage in case of poisoning. Ibn Al-Nafis was the first to discover pulmonary circulation.

Ibn Sina in his masterpiece Al-Quanun (Canon), containing over a million words, described complete studies of physiology, patlhology and hygiene. He specifically discoursed upon breast cancer, poisons, diseases of the skin, rabies, insomnia, childbirth and the use of obstetrical forceps, meningitis, amnesia, stomach ulcers, tuberculosis as a contagious disease, facial tics, phlebotomy, tumors, kidney diseases and geriatric care. He defined love as a mental disease.

OPHTHALMOLOGY

The doctors of Islam exhibited a high degree of proficiency and certainly were foremost in the treatment of eye diseases. Words such as retina and cataract are of Arabic origin. In ophthalmology and optics lbn al Haytham (965-1039 A.D.) known to the West as Alhazen wrote the Optical Thesaurus from which such worthies as Roger Bacon, Leonardo da Vinci and Johannes Kepler drew theories for their own writings.

In his Thesaurus he showed that light falls on the retina in the same manner as it falls on a surface in a darkened room through a small aperture, thus conclusively proving that vision happens when light rays pass from objects towards the eye and not from the eye towards the objects as thought by the Greeks. He presents experiments for testing the angles of incidence and reflection, and a theoretical proposal for magnifying lens (made in Italy three centuries later).

He also taught that the image made on the retina is conveyed along the optic nerve to the brain. Razi was the first to recognize the reaction of the pupil to light and Ibn Sina was the first to describe the exact number of extrinsic muscles of the eyeball, namely six. The greatest contribution of Islamic medicine in practical ophthalmology was in the matter of cataract.

The most significant development in the extraction of cataract was developed by Ammar bin Ali of Mosul, who introduced a hollow metallic needle through the sclerotic and extracted the lens by suction. Europe rediscovered this in the nineteenth century.

PHARMACOLOGY

Pharmacology took roots in Islam during the 9th century. Yuhanna bin Masawayh (777-857 A.D.) started scientific and systematic applications of therapeutics at the Abbasids capital. His students Hunayn bin Ishaq al-lbadi (809-874 A.D.) and his associates established solid foundations of Arabic medicine and therapeutics in the ninth century. In his book al-Masail Hunayn outlined methods for confirming the pharmacological effectiveness of drugs by experimenting with them on humans. He also explained the importance of prognosis and diagnosis of diseases for better and more effective treatment.

Pharmacy became an independent and separate profession from medicine and alchemy. With the wild sprouting of apothecary shops, regulations became necessary and imposed to maintain quality control." The Arabian apothecary shops were regularly inspected by a syndic (Muhtasib) who threatened the merchants with humiliating corporal punishments if they adulterated drugs." As early as the days of al-Mamun and al-Mutasim pharmacists had to pass examinations to become licensed professionals and were pledged to follow the physician's prescriptions. Also by this decree, restrictive measures were legally placed upon doctors, preventing them from owning or holding stock in a pharmacy.

Methods of extracting and preparing medicines were brought to a high art, and their techniques of distillation, crystallization, solution, sublimation, reduction and calcination became the essential processes of pharmacy and chemistry.
With the help of these techniques, the Saydalanis (pharmacists) introduced new drugs such as camphor, senna, sandalwood, rhubarb, musk, myrrh, cassia, tamarind, nutmeg, alum, aloes, cloves, coconut, nuxvomica, cubebs, aconite, ambergris and mercury.

The important role of the Muslims in developing modern pharmacy and chemistry is memorialized in the significant number of current pharmaceutical and chemical terms derived from Arabic: drug, alkali, alcohol, aldehydes, alembic, and elixir among others, not to mention syrups and juleps. They invented flavorings extracts made of rose water, orange blossom water, orange and lemon peel, tragacanth and other attractive ingredients. Space does not permit me to list the contributions to pharmacology and therapeutics, made by Razi, Zahrawi, Biruni, Ibn Butlan, and Tamimi.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

From freckle lotion to psychotherapy- such was the range of treatment practiced by the physicians of Islam. Though freckles continue to sprinkle the skin of 20th century man, in the realm of psychosomatic disorders both al-Razi and Ibn Sina achieved dramatic results, antedating Freud and Jung by a thousand years. When Razi was appointed physician-in-chief to the Baghdad Hospital, he made it the, first hospital to have a ward exclusively devoted to the mentally ill."

Razi combined psychological methods and physiological explanations, and he used psychotherapy in a dynamic fashion, Razi was once called in to treat a famous caliph who had severe arthritis. He advised a hot bath, and while the caliph was bathing, Razi threatened him with a knife, proclaiming he was going to kill him.

This deliberate provocation increased the natural caloric which thus gained sufficient strength to dissolve the already softened humours, as a result the caliph got up from is knees in the bath and ran after Razi. One woman who suffered from such severe cramps in her joints that she was unable to rise was cured by a physician who lifted her skirt, thus putting her to shame. "A flush of heat was produced within her which dissolved the rheumatic humour."

The Arabs brought a refreshing spirit of dispassionate clarity into psychiatry. They were free from the demonological theories which swept over the Christian world and were therefore able to make clear cut clinical observations on the mentally ill.

Najab ud din Muhammad'", a contemporary of Razi, left many excellent descriptions of various mental diseases. His carefully compiled observation on actual patients made up the most complete classification of mental diseases theretofore known." Najab described agitated depression, obsessional types of neurosis, Nafkhae Malikholia (combined priapism and sexual impotence). Kutrib (a form of persecutory psychosis), Dual-Kulb (a form of mania) .

Ibn Sina recognized 'physiological psychology' in treating illnesses involving emotions. From the clinical perspective Ibn Sina developed a system for associating changes in the pulse rate with inner feelings which has been viewed as anticipating the word association test of Jung. He is said to have treated a terribly ill patient by feeling the patient's pulse and reciting aloud to him the names of provinces, districts, towns, streets, and people. By noticing how the patient's pulse quickened when names were mentioned Ibn Sina deduced that the patient was in love with a girl whose home Ibn Sina was able to locate by the digital examination. The man took Ibn Sina's advice , married the girl , and recovered from his illness.

It is not surprising to know that at Fez, Morocco, an asylum for the mentally ill had been built early in the 8th century, and insane, asylums were built by the Arabs also in Baghdad in 705 A.D., in Cairo in 800 A.D., and in Damascus and Aleppo in 1270 A.D. In addition to baths, drugs, kind and benevolent treatment given to the mentally ill, musico-therapy and occupational therapy were also employed. These therapies were highly developed. Special choirs and live music bands were brought daily to entertain the patients by providing singing and musical performances and comic performers as well.

CONCLUSION

1,000 years ago Islamic medicine was the most advanced in the world at that time. Even after ten centuries, the achievements of Islamic medicine look amazingly modern. 1,000 years ago the Muslims were the great torchbearers of international scientific research. Every student and professional from each country outside the Islamic Empire, aspired, yearned, a dreamed to go to the Islamic universities to learn, to work, to live and to lead a comfortable life in an affluent and most advanced and civilized society. Today, in this twentieth century, the United States of America has achieved such a position. The pendulum can swing back. Fortunately Allah has given a bounty to many Islamic countries - an income over 100 billion dollars per year. The Abbassids

The 'Abassid caliphate (758-1258) was founded on two disaffected Islamic populations: non-Arabic Muslims and Shi'ites. For the most part, the Islamic impetus to the Abassid revolution lay in the secularism of the Umayyad caliphs. The Umayyads had always been outsiders—as a wealthy clan in Mecca, they had opposed Muhammad—and the secularism and sometime degeneracy that accompanied their caliphate delegitimized their rule for many devout Muslims.

The Abbasids took their name from al-'Abbas, a paternal uncle of Muhammad and early supporter of the Prophet. Their close kinship to Muhammad and the position of al-'Abbas as a Companion of the Prophet served them well in gaining support. As early as 718 AD, during the reign of Umar II, Muhammad ibn 'Ali, a great-grandson of al-'Abbas, began to proselytize in Persia to rally support for returning the caliphate to the family of the Prophet, the Hashimites.

What made the 'Abbasid seizure of the caliphate unique was the heavy reliance on client Muslims, or mawali. The mawali were foreigners who had converted to Islam; because, however, they were foreigners they could not be incorporated into the kinship-based society of Arabs. They had to be voluntarily included into the protection of a clan, that is, they had to become "clients" of the clan (which is what the word mawali means). For the most part, they were second-class citizens even though they were Muslims.

The overwhelming majority of foreigners who rallied to the Hashimiyya cause were Iranian. Historians have argued that the 'Abbasid caliphate represented a shift in Islam from Semitic to Iranian culture; other historians argue that there really no such shift. The truth probably lies somewhere in between.

When the 'Abbasids took power, the center of Islamic culture shifted from the Semitic world in Arabia and Syria to the Iranian or Persian world in Iraq. By shifting the capital from Damascus to Baghdad, the 'Abassids brought about a dynamic fusion of Persian and Semitic culture.

The dynasty was started when Abu'l-'Abbass assumed the caliphate from 750-754 AD / 132-136 AH. Both he and his successor, Abu Ja'far al-Mansur (754-775 / 136-158), ruthlessly consolidated power and began a series of administrative moves that would characterize Islamic government for the next several centuries.

As with Umayyads, they separated themselves from the general Islamic populace, but they surrounded themselves with foreigners rather than Arabs, particularly in the military. This bred bitter resentment, particularly among Arabs, such as the Khorosanian Arabs, that had helped them rise to power.

The Umayyads

The Umayyads, however, did not take being removed from power lying down. In 756, the Umayyads established a rival empire in Spain, though they did not set up a rival caliphate until 929. They were aided in their seizing of power by Kharjite North Africans and, in particular, Berbers, who had been instrumental in the conquest of Spain earlier.

The Umayyad caliphate flourished in Spain for the next three centuries and the Islamic culture that grew on this fertile soil, the Moorish culture, was dramatically different from the Iranian-Semitic culture that grew up around the 'Abbasid Caliphate.

The Early Years

The 'Abassids only came to power with the help of diverse and disaffected populations; even though they consolidated power fairly ruthlessly in the beginning, their control over the world of Islam unravelled quickly. The first threat came with the establishment of Umayyad rule in Spain which, because of its distance, obviated any military reconquest of the area. Soon after, rival Islamic states were set up by Berber Kharjites in North Africa in 801.

The Shi'ites were a particular thorn in 'Abassid rule; the 'Abassids had come to power by using both Shi'ite help and rhetoric. The Shi'ites, however, were not a single, unitary group, and the 'Abassids abandoned their ties to the Shi'a beliefs. Efforts were made to make peace with moderate Shi'ites, but these soon broke down. An uprising in Mecca in 786 led to a massacre of Shi'ite 'Alids—the survivors, however, fled to the western region of Africa, or the Maghreb, and established a new and independent kingdom, the Idrisid kingdom.

By the beginning of the ninth century, the caliph's control over the Islamic world was beginning to crumble. It was into this increasingly bleak picture that al-Mamun suddenly appeared.

Al-Ma'mun

Abd Allah, or al-Ma'mun, had not been named as a successor to the caliphate—this instead fell to his brother, Muhammad, called al-Amin. The brothers soon fell out, however, and al-Mamun seized the caliphate in 813. As with his predecessors, he tried to incorporate Shi'ites into the Islamic government, but his entire reign was spent in quelling disturbances among Shi'ites and anit-Shi'ites. He seems to have just held the line in the disintegration of the 'Abbasid caliphate. There are, however, two great innovations that irrevocably changed the course of Islamic history.

The first was a military revolution begun by his brother, al-Mu'tasim. The constant revolutions and the deep division in Islamic society convinced al-Ma'mun that he needed a military force whose only loyalty was to him. So his brother, who would later become caliph (833-842 / 218-27), assembled a military force of slaves, called Mamluks.

Many of the Mamluks were Turkish, who were famous for the horsemanship. But the Mamluk military also consisted of Slavs and some Berbers. By the middle of al-Wathiq's reign, the Mamluk army had completely displaced the Arabian and Persian army under the caliph. This army, and al-Mu'tasim's abandonment of Baghdad for Samarra, caused bitter resentment among Muslims and would irreperably sever the protective bond between the Islamic sovereign and the Islamic people.

It also introduced a new ethnic group in the Islamic world, the Mamluks, who would eventually play a powerful role in the drama of power and decline in medieval Islam.

More importantly, al-Ma'mun energetically patronized Greek, Sanskrit and Arabic learning and so altered the cultural and intellectual face of Islam. He adopted a radical theological position, called Mu'tazilism, which was regarded as somewhat heretical by more orthodox Muslims.
Nevertheless, Mu'tazilism had as one of its fundamental beliefs the idea that Muslims should obey a single ruler. In order to facilitate the spread of Mu'tazilite teaching, al-Ma'mun established a university, the House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikma ).

It was here that Hellenistic and Indian works made their way into Islamic culture through a series of translations. Islam incorporated into its culture and belief the philosophical method of inquiry of the Hellenist world—it is for this reason that philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle were passed on to succeeding generations.

This incorporation led to a new Islamic intellectual practice, faylasafa, or philosophy, based on principles of rational inquiry and to some extent empiricism.

Decline

After the caliphate of al-Mu'tasim and that of his son, al-Wathiq (842-47 / 227-32), the centralized power of the caliphate declined centrifugally. By 945, the area around Iraq fell to a dynasty of amirs , the Buyid dynasty. The 'Abbasids remained as caliphs until 1030, but they were only figureheads.

Islamic history entered a new phase. The history of early Islam is a history of the spread of a single cultural force throughout the Iranian, Semitic, North African, and to a lesser extent, the Hellenistic and European worlds. That single cultural force was religious, social, linguistic, and political and was based almost entirely on Arabic culture and world view.

In the earliest years, there is a remarkable consolidation in the regions where Islam spreads—there is by and large an acceptance of a central authority, a government structure, a religion, a language, and a cultural chauvinism. During the latter years of the Umayyad caliphate, that cultural and political unity began to break down.

The 'Abbasids, in adopting Iranian culture in part and in distancing themselves from their Semitic origins (for instance, by instituting Mamluk armies), further accelerated the cultural divisions in the world of Islam. After only two hundred years in power, the unified cultural and political world of Islam broke down into a myriad independent cultural and political units.

And thus began the medieval period in Islam, a period of cultural and political disunity and decentralization. This was not, however, a bad thing; Islamic culture, split into several different groups that were often divided along ethnic lines, expanded the cultural and intellectual richness of the religion.

By the end of the medieval period, even the fiction of a cultural or political unity of Islam had been completely destroyed. The historical process, then, of medieval Islam was primarily about cultural and political decentralization—modern Islam would be the history of powerful cultural centers in this divided world.

Accomplishments of the Abbassids

The Abbasid Khilafah lasted from 750-1258 CE. Khalifah Abu Jafar Al-Mansur, the second Abbasid Khalifah, moved the capital of the Islamic Empire from Damascus in Syria to Baghdad in Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia was the richest province in the empire in tax and agricultural productions. Baghdad was between the Tigris and Euphrates River so it became the center of trade, learning, and government.

Economy

Baghdad's economy relied on taxes, and wealth generated by trade and manufacturing. The empire was rich in gold, silver, copper, and iron and used them in trade. Farmers grew dates, rice, and other grains. In addition, the Abbasids introduced new breeds of livestock.

They also spread cotton. Traders from Scandinavia to Africa came to Baghdad for the products of its industries too. Leather goods, textiles, paper, metalwork, and perfumes were sold in the city. The Abbasids developed something very similar to the banking system.
They did not have bank buildings but business people invested in long distance trade and goods were bought on credit. They also had a postal system. Muslim rule unified the eastern world. They introduced a uniform coinage system that made commerce easier. The Abbasids treated non-Muslims well. In their time, there were 11000 Christian churches, and hundreds of synagogues and fire temples.

Learning

The great wealth made the Abbasids able to support learning and arts. Muslims believed long before Columbus's time that the earth was round. They invented algebra. They wrote the first accurate descriptions of measles and smallpox. They had clean hospitals.

They built the Bayt-al-Hikmah (House of Wisdom) in which scholars from different lands came and studied. It served as a museum, library, translation office, school, and meeting center. Books about mathematics, meteorology, optics, mechanics, astronomy, philosophy, medicine, etc. were translated into Arabic from Hebrew, Greek, Persian, Syriac, and other languages.

Al-Razi, Ibn Sina, Al-Biruni, and Al-Khwarizmi were some of the famous scholars of that time. Muslims collected writings of the schools of Alexandria and the best philosophical works of ancient Greek. There were special departments under qualified professors for promotion and prosecution of special branches of study. Astronomical observations were made in Mamun's reign.

Among these equinoxes, eclipses, the apparitions of comets and other celestial bodies was most important. The size of the earth was calculated from the measurement of a degree on the shores of the Red Sea. At this time, Europe was asserting the flatness of the earth. Abul Hassan invented the telescope.
The telescope was improved and used in the observatories of Maragha and Cairo with great success. The first observatory of Islam was made in Mamun's reign at Shamassia on the plains of Tadmur. Afterwards several more were created

lslam is the religion of all times and places. It is a perfect system of temporal values. By practicing its laws Muslims all over the world not only attain spirituality but the pinnacle of all other glories and gain the wealth of health.

There is a great inter-relationship between modern medicine and some of our Islamic teachings.

Every word of Qur'an is in fact an experience of great reality and science is just an effort made towards this reality. Knowledge is limitless and its horizons are constantly expanding with every strike of progress disclosing fresh informations and according to Qur'anic knowledge is a comprehensive text and it involves all branches of sciences, religion, technology, agriculture, engineering and medicine. It is definitely a miracle of our sacred religion that it expands on all branches of human knowledge. This is known from the following quotation from Qur'an:

"We have revealed to you the Scripture so that it might be a clear evidence for every thing."

In the following paper I have tried to elucidate that the guidelines given in the Quran and Sunnah concerned with the promotion of physical health of humans have been duly proved by years of modern medical scientific research all over the world. Some of them which I am going to deal with in this paper.

Prayers PRAYERS:

In Sura Moon "God deprecates those who are careless in their prayers offer them only for show." The blessed Prophet told us "Prayers are certainly health promoting." Although the real purpose of prayers is to worship Allah yet there is a large number of additional benefits also.

Exercise EXERCISE:

As we eat three times daily we need exercises to lessen the cholesterol in the body which increases in the blood after meals, thickens it and leads to the deposition of slit in the arteries.

In addition to saving us from the sins and elevating us to the heights of spirituality, prayers are great help in maintaining our physical health. They keep our body active, help digestion and save us from muscle and joint diseases through regular balanced exercise. They help the circulation of blood and also mitigate the bad effect of cholesterol. Prayers play a vital role in acting as a preventive measure against heart attack, paralyses, premature senility, dementia, loss of control on sphineters, diabetes mellitus etc.

In addition to saving us from the sins and elevating us to the heights of spirituality, prayers are great help in maintaining our physical health. They keep our body active, help digestion and save us from muscle and joint diseases through regular balanced exercise. They help the circulation of blood and also mitigate the bad effect of cholesterol. Prayers play a vital role in acting as a preventive measure against heart attack, paralyses, premature senility, dementia, loss of control on sphineters, diabetes mellitus etc.

Collateral circulation plays a major role in decreasing the danger of heart attack in patients. Patients above 55 years of age in which this type of circulation is developed have less severe attacks. It is possible to speed up the development of collateral circulation by regular and balanced exercises which is present in the prayers are not only potent, preventive measure against coronary heart diseases but also help in the development of collateral circulation in those people who have already suffered from a heart attack or are prone to it.

Heart patients should offer-the five obligatory prayers regularly as they get the permission from their doctor to leave bed.

The arrangement of prayers is such that those at the time of empty stomach are brief but those after meals are longer and give more exercise to the body.

During the month of Fast (Ramadan) the additional twenty Rakaat (Tarawih) are added to the late evening prayers because more than normal food is usually consumed after breaking fast.

The performance of prayers put almost all muscles of the body in action. Different groups of muscles are activated while performing prayers. During Sajda blood supply to the brain is improved. One of the useful methods to strengthen the muscles of the knee joints to mitigate the strain on knees in osteo arthritis is the regular exercise of these muscles during prayers.

Heart HEART:

This vital organ of the body has to be always healthy and efficient as it is responsible for the circulation of blood. Diseased heart results in deterioration of the healthy body. This knowledge we obtained after centuries of scientific research yet it was simply told to us fourteen hundred years ago by our great Prophet (peace be upon him).

"Verily in the body there is such apiece of flesh that if it remains alright the whole body keeps well but if this piece of flesh develops some defect the whole body becomes unhealthy. Behold,- this piece of flesh - it is heart." (Bokhari, Muslim ...)

Siesta SIESTA:

It was the habit of our blessed Prophet to sleep for a while after lunch, his companions also followed this practice. This short nap gives relief to the vital organs of the body like heart and brain.

Moderation in Food MODERATION IN FOOD:

Both Qur'anand Hadith have touched this topic, Qur'an tells us in Ayah 30 of Sura Al Airaf:

"O children of Adam, look to your adornment of every place of worship and eat and drink but not prodigal Lo! He loveth not the prodigals."

Strenthening this order, the Prophet has strictly forbidden over eating in the following Haith:

"It is enough to eat few morsels of food to keep one's back straight."

"If you must eat more, be sure that only one third of your stomach is filled with food, one third is left for water and the remaining one third for air."

"A Muslim eats in one intestine (stomach) whereas a non believer eats in seven intestine."

It has been proved beyond doubt that over eating is the root of many diseases and also responsible for premature senility. It produces obesity, predisposes to dangerous diseases like diabetes, menitus, hypertension, coronary heart disease and paralysis.

Diabetes Mellitus DIABETES MELLITUS:

This is due to insulin deficiency. Overeating gets the special cells of the pancreas (islets of Langerhans) over worked so it cannot meet the increased demand for insulin . Those cells may get tired, atrophy and causes difficiency of insulin .

Paralysis, Coronary Heart Disease and Premature Senility PARALYSIS, CORONARY HEART DISEASE & PREMATURE SENILITY:

Their basic course is the narrowing of the coronary arteries. Paralysis is the natural result of blocking of an artery in the brain, should this happen in the heart Myocardial infection results. Premature senility is installed when majority of the arteries in the body get narrowed.

Slit in the form of cholesterol and triglycerides is deposited in the arteries. Over eating increases blood cholesterol levels. Pork and beef contain high cholesterol values while on the other hand birds have the least amount. Qur'an mentioned that birds meat is one of the specialties of Paradise.

Olive has been repeatedly mentioned in Qur'an, and statistics shows that heart attacks occur more in Northern Italy where they use butter and margarine for cooking than in Southern Italy where olive oil is generally used.

Patients suffering from narrowing of the coronary artery usually develop the heart attack after a heavy meal.

Forbidden Articles of Food FORBIDDEN ARTICLES OF FOOD:

1. Blood:
Ingested blood on reaching the intestine is acted upon by various bacteria normally present there resulting in poisonous products like ammonia which is toxic to the liver.Therefore,God has forbidden us to eat or drink blood and has prescribed such a method for slaughtering animals that most of their blood is shed.

2. Pork:
There are two harmful worms harbored by pigs, one is "TAENIASOLIUM" which on ingestion passes to the brain and causes epilepsy. The other one is "TRICHINELLASPIRALIS" which passes to the muscles and brain causing muscular swelling and pain and also epilepsy. Pork has more fat and cholesterol than any other meat.

3. Alcohol:
Numerous diseases have been attributed to alcohol like dyspeptic trouble, peptic ulceration, cancer stomach, pancreatitus, cirrhosis liver, vitamin deficiency and coronary heart disease.

Islamic Medicine: Circumcision CIRCUMCISION:

One of the criteria of Islam is that every Muslim should be circumcised. This is medically suggested nowadays as a toxic substance called Smegma may collect under the redundant skin causing cancer of the genitalia in both man and his wife, inflammation of the penis, phthisis, sticking of the redundant skin over the urethral opening leading to difficulty in urination.

Washing after Defecation WASHING AFTER DEFECATION:

This beneficial habit saves us from Pilonidal sinus which is an abscess with hair inside occurring near anal opening.

Pylonephritis: This is more in women due to the proximity of the urethral opening to the anus so toilet paper while being used may bring germs like E. coli to the urethra.

Ablution ABLUTION:

A prerequisite of prayers yet one of the most hygienic procedure as it usually keeps the exposed parts of our body clean and also the parts of entry like mouth and nose thus avoiding infection.

Prevention of Infection PREVENTION OF INFECTION:

Infection may be transmitted through dirty hands or dirty food. Hands: It is essential to wash our hands before and after meals. Our blessed Prophet told us:

"It is a blessing to wash your hands before and after meals." (Abu Daud & Tirmizi)

He has also advised us not to clean our hands with a towel before meals as they may convey infection from one person to the other particularly viral diseases like infective hepatitis or bacterial infection like Typhoid dysentries and cholera.

Or Prophet said:

"Whosover gets up from slumber should not dip his hand in any utensil unless he washes them three times, who knows what things he has been touching during sleep." (Bokhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, Nisai)

Islamic Medicine: Articles of Beverages ARTICLES OF BEVERAGES:

These articles should be handled with great care. If the food is in open utensil they should be covered to avoid contamination. Stressing this our Prophet said "Cover up the utensils and tie the mouth of the water skins." He said, "Why did you not cover the utensil carrying the milk even if - it was with a piece of wood." (Bokhari, Muslim)

Dental Hygiene DENTAL HYGIENE:

Particular stress has been laid by our Prophet on this as it is very important in the prevention of disease. He attached great importance to "Miswak" a twig of a tree used for brushing teeth. "If I had not thought this to be an unbearable hardship for my followers I would have prescribed the use of Miswak before every prayers." (Bokhari, Muslim)

According to modern dentistry the best method of using a Miswak or a tooth brush is up and down the length of the teeth and this exactly the way our Prophet used his Miswak.

Islamic Medicine: Khillala KHILLALA:

The blessed Prophet said "Whosoever eats should pick bits and pieces from in between his teeth." It is beneficial act so that those do not rot and produce disease.

Heatstroke HEATSTROKE:

Covering the head and neck as our Prophet used to do, mitigate the danger of hyperpyrexia which is due to imbalance of the heat control centre situated in the hind brain, which may lead to death.

Islamic Medicine: Treatment of Fever TREATMENT OF FEVER:

Death occurs if the temperature of the body exceeds 106 degrees irrespective of the cause. Medically speaking the first line of treatment is to lower the temperature by cold water, ice sponging or even immersing the patient in cold water. On this Prophet said:

"The fever is related to the Hell. Application of cold water keeps it away." (Ibne Maja)

Islamic Medicine: Constipation CONSTIPATION:

The blessed Prophet advised that while defaecating keep pressure on the left foot (Tibrani). In squatting position this maneuvers will cause pressure on the descending colon. Medically this helps evacuation of feaces from the descending colon thus relieving constipation, particularly when muscles of the abdomen are weak.

Disease of Digestion DISEASES OF DIGESTION:

Several Hadiths pertaining to this were said:

"It is unbecoming to eat in the Bazar (Market)."

"Whosoever eats earth aid his death." (Tibrani)

"Use curry with food even if it is in the form of water." (Tibrani).

"Vinegear is a very good curry."

"The best curry is common salt."

Salt depletion through perspiration during summer is increased thus it is obligatory to use common salt during this period.

Abraham Lincoln and His Cabinet Appreciated Homeopathic Medicine

(NaturalNews) Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) showed a special interest in and appreciation for homeopathic medicine. In 1854, before Lincoln was elected president, he was retained as a lawyer to prepare a state legislative proposal to charter a homeopathic medical college in Chicago. Because Chicago was the home of the American Medical Association, which had been founded in 1847 in part to stop the growth of homeopathy, Lincoln's job was no simple effort.

However, many of Chicago's most prominent citizens and politicians participated on the board of trustees of the proposed Hahnemann Medical College, including Chicago's mayor, two congressmen, an Illinois state representative, a Chicago city councilman, the co-founder of Northwestern University, the founder of Chicago Union Railroad, and several medical doctors who were homeopaths (Spiegel and Kavaler, 2002). Despite significant opposition, Lincoln was successful in obtaining a charter for the homeopathic college.

Today, the Pearson Museum at Southern Illinois University has an exhibit of a nineteenth-century doctor's office and drug store; included in this exhibit is a homeopathic medicine kit from the Diller Drug Store of Springfield, Illinois.

The exhibit notes that Abraham Lincoln was a frequent customer of the drug store and a regular user of homeopathic medicines (Karst, 1988, 11).

Lincoln surrounded himself with advocates for homeopathy, especially his most trusted advisor and Secretary of State, William Steward. Ultimately, the story of what happened to William Seward is a classic story in medical history that exemplifies conventional medicine's attitude toward and actions against unconventional medical treatments and the physicians who provide them.

On the night Lincoln was assassinated, Seward was stabbed in the multi-person assassination plot against the Union. Thanks to the medical care provided by Joseph K. Barnes, MD, U.S. Surgeon General, Seward survived. However, because Seward's personal physician was a homeopathic doctor and because the AMA had a policy that it was an ethical violation to consult with a homeopathic doctor or even provide care for a homeopathic patient, Dr. Barnes was denounced by the vice president of the AMA for providing medical care (Haller, 2005, 192).

In addition to choosing Seward to be his secretary of state, several leading advisors were homeopathic advocates. On November 1, 1861, Lincoln appointed Major General George Brinton McClellan (1826-1885) to command the Union army during the Civil War. However, in late December McClellan contracted typhoid fever, which left him unable to go to his office to conduct business (Rafuse, 1997).

During the first week of McClellan's illness, two homeopathic doctors arrived from New York to care for the ill general and his father-in-law and chief of staff, Randolph B. Marcy, who was also ill. McClellan's decision to employ homeopathic doctors is particularly interesting considering the fact that the general came from a family of prominent conventional physicians.

Despite this serious illness, General McClellan remained active, giving regular orders to his subordinates, arranging for troop movement and supply transport, meeting with the president on a weekly basis, issuing court martial orders, and even providing commendations to officers. By January 2, he seemed to be much better and shortly afterwards he had no noticeable physical limitations. McClellan lived another twenty-three years.

Despite the success of this homeopathic treatment on the military leader of the Union army, that very month, January 1862, the Army Medical Board rejected requests by homeopathic doctors to serve in military hospitals, arguing that to grant this request would invite applications from all types of quacks and charlatans claiming medical expertise.

Typhoid fever caused more deaths during the Civil War and the Spanish-American War than the deaths caused by bullets (Wershub, 1967, 175). Despite the fact that homeopathy gained widespread popularity in the United States and Europe due to its successes in treating various infectious disease epidemics of the mid- and late-1800s, including typhoid epidemics (Bradford, 1900; Coulter, 1973), the antagonism against homeopathy and homeopaths led to government regulations stipulating that graduates of homeopathic medical colleges could not receive a commission for military service.

In Connecticut, several "irregular" physicians offered their services to the governor, who accepted them, but the examining board of the Union army rejected them and instead accepted recruits from a hastily graduated class from Yale College.

Although the Union army had strict restrictions against homeopathic physicians, the Confederate army did not. In fact, the physician to the wife of the Confederate army's General Robert E. Lee was a homeopathic doctor, Alfred Hughes, MD (Hughes, 1904, 39). At least in one incidence, General Lee himself was known to have taken homeopathic medicines (Mainwaring and Riley, 2005).

Thankfully, the antagonism toward homeopaths was not as severe during World War I; almost 2,000 homeopathic physicians were commissioned as medical officers. Even the American Red Cross authorized a homeopathic hospital unit (Dearborn, 1923).

Lincoln was also known to appoint some homeopathic physicians to political positions. For instance, in 1863 he appointed Dr. J. G. Hunt, author of a book on homeopathy and surgery (Hill and Hunt, 1855), to be consul to Nicaragua (King, 1905, I, 177).

Lincoln also signed a bill into law that gave the president the authority to make appointments to the Union army's medical department, including homeopaths (Haller, 2005, 187). However, orthodox physicians strongly asserted that they would not work with homeopaths in any way, thus creating new and more difficult problems in military medicine.

Although Lincoln surrounded himself with advocates for homeopathy, that didn't protect the medical science from his famous wit. He once called homeopathy "medicine of a shadow of a pigeon's wing."

On a more serious note, it should also be mentioned that the personal physician to Mary Lincoln (1818-1882) during the later part of her life was a homeopathic physician and surgeon from Chicago, Dr. Willis Danforth. Mary Lincoln was known to have experienced serious bouts of depression after her husband was assassinated and two of her children died, one at age 11 (1862) and the other at 18 (1871).

Mary Lincoln became the sole heir of the Lincoln estate and her extravagant spending and unusual behavior later in life concerned her son Robert so much that in 1874, he sought to get her declared insane and sent to a mental asylum. The testimony of her homeopath, Danforth, confirmed her insanity because he noted that Mrs. Lincoln experienced "nervous derangement" and had delusions.
She was committed to the asylum, but was free to move about the grounds, and was released three months later. Recent research has uncovered strong evidence to suggest that Mary Lincoln also suffered from syphilis, which may help explain her crazed mental state (Hayden, 2003, 120-132).

India may be famous worldwide for Ayurveda but the defence forces would not recognise its healing powers. The result - defence forces would not reimburse defence personnel for availing such treatment. This became an issue in a petition filed before the High Court of Delhi recently.

The division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna hearing the petition, directed the Centre to frame guidelines for compensation to defence personnel who wished to avail treatment under Ayurvedic or Homeopathic system of medicine.

The court also directed the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to frame guidelines relating to medical treatment and reimbursement within three months in consultation with the heads of all three defence forces.

Petitioner Rajesh Srivastava, a social worker filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before Delhi High Court seeking such directions. Advocate Arjun Harkauli appearing for petitioner pointed out a case of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, where an NSG commando injured seriously and is now on medical advise to get Ayurvedic treatment for his survival, but defence force denied monthly reimbursement of Rs. 4000 for his Ayurvedic treatment.

The petition stated, “The national policy on Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy 2002 recognized the alternative medicines which are helpful for certain diseases but the defence forces refuse reimbursement for the treatment of any personnel through such alternative therapies.”

The petition also submitted that it is arbitrary that while the central government promotes Ayurveda, Siddha and Homeopathy as legitimate form of medicine, the defence forces do not recognise such systems of medicine despite its proven curative capacity and scientific basis.

What are styes and chalazia?

Styes and chalazia are lumps in or along the edge of an eyelid. They may be painful or annoying, but they are rarely serious. Most will go away on their own without treatment.

* A stye camera is an infection that causes a tender red lump on the eyelid. Most styes occur along the edge of the eyelid. When a stye occurs inside the eyelid, it is called an internal hordeolum (say "hor-dee-OH-lum").
* A chalazion camera (say "kuh-LAY-zee-on") is a lump in the eyelid. Chalazia (plural) may look like styes, but they are usually larger and may not be painful.

Styes and chalazia may be related to blepharitis, a common problem that causes inflammation of the eyelids.
What causes a stye or chalazion?

Styes are caused by a bacterial infection. Usually the bacteria grow in the root (follicle) of an eyelash. An internal hordeolum is caused by infection in one of the tiny oil glands inside the eyelid.

A chalazion develops when an oil gland in the eyelid becomes blocked. If an internal hordeolum doesn't drain and heal, it can turn into a chalazion.
What are the symptoms?

A stye usually starts as a red bump that looks like a pimple along the edge of the eyelid.

* As the stye grows, the eyelid becomes swollen and painful, and the eye may water.
* Most styes swell for about 3 days before they break open and drain.
* Styes usually heal in about a week.

A chalazion forms a firm lump or cyst under the skin of the eyelid.

* Chalazia grow more slowly than styes. If a chalazion gets large enough, it may interfere with vision.
* The inflammation and swelling may spread to the area surrounding the eye.
* Chalazia often go away in a few months without treatment.

7 August 2006 - I suffered from massive heart attack and was admitted to Intensive Care Unit at private Medical Centre at Kuala Lumpur.

The causes of sexual problems are as varied and complex as the human race. Some problems stem from a simple, reversible physical problem. Others can stem from more serious medical conditions, difficult life situations, or emotional problems. Still others have a combination of causes. Any of the following can contribute to sexual problems:

* Relationship problems - Discord in other aspects of the relationship, such as distribution of labor, childrearing, or money, can cause sexual problems. Issues of control or even abuse in the relationship are especially harmful to sexual harmony. Such problems can prevent a woman from communicating her sexual wants and needs to her partner.

* Emotional problems - Depression, anxiety (about sex or other things), stress, resentment, and guilt can all affect a woman's sexual function.

o Vaginitis - Inflammation and irritation of vaginal tissues due to infection or other causes can make intercourse uncomfortable or painful.

o Endometriosis, pelvic mass, ovarian cyst, surgical scars - Any of these can cause an obstruction that prevents intercourse or makes it difficult or painful.

What is it?

As the word ‘polycystic’ suggests, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition in which the ovaries develop multiple cysts. Cysts are a normal part of the maturation of the egg during the ovulation cycle. For up to 10% of women this for some reason goes wrong. The eggs and cysts develop normally, but for some reason the cyst never opens to release the egg into the fallopian tubes. The egg and cyst are retained in the ovaries forming and retaining new cysts with each ovulation cycle.

What Are the Signs of Miscarriage?

Miscarriage, technically called spontaneous abortion, is defined as the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks of gestation. It has been estimated to occur in up to 20 percent of all pregnancies. The actual number, however, is probably higher. Many miscarriages occur very early, going unnoticed before a woman is even aware that she is pregnant.

More than 80 percent of miscarriages occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. At least half of these early miscarriages are thought to be caused by abnormalities with the fetus's chromosomes. Most of the time, the chromosome problems that cause a miscarriage are not inherited from the parents.

In other words, the chromosome defect in the fetus is not caused by a similar defect in the chromosomes of the mother or father. Rather, these errors usually happen by chance as the fertilized egg begins to divide. The fetus would not have been able to survive when a miscarriage occurs due to a chromosome defect. Miscarriage early in pregnancy can occur as many as several weeks after the embryo or fetus has actually died.

The mother's health may be another cause of miscarriage. These usually occurs later in pregnancy. They include infection, chronic diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure, and problems with the immune system. Abnormalities of the uterus or cervix can also cause miscarriage.

Among these problems are cervical incompetence, in which the cervix begins to dilate too early in pregnancy. This type of miscarriage almost always happens in the second trimester.

Recurrent or repeated miscarriage is defined as three or more miscarriages in a row. (You may hear this referred to as habitual abortion.) The causes of this are much the same as those for a single miscarriage. Although tests can be done to find the reason for repeated miscarriage, the tests can be costly and the treatment options are somewhat limited. Even so, many couples go on to have a successful pregnancy later.

Miscarriage is not caused by exercising, having sex, working, or lifting heavy objects. Nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy, even if severe, will not cause a miscarriage. (In fact, there is some evidence that women who have these symptoms are less likely to miscarry.) Finally, it is unlikely that a fall, a blow, or a sudden fright can cause miscarriage.
First Signs of Miscarriage

One of the first signs of miscarriage is vaginal bleeding. Up to 25 percent of all pregnant women have bleeding at some point in pregnancy, about half of those will have a miscarriage. Bleeding that is a sign of miscarriage may be scant or heavy. It may be constant, or it may come and go.

Bleeding may be followed by cramping abdominal pain and, in some women, lower backache. Although there may be other reasons for these symptoms (see "Spotting or bleeding" and "Pelvic pain"), you should contact your doctor if you have any type of bleeding or severe pain in pregnancy.
How is Miscarriage Diagnosed?

If you come to your doctor's office with bleeding, the first thing she or he will want to do is to perform a pelvic exam to check whether your cervix has begun to dilate. If it has, this situation is called threatened abortion; a miscarriage will not necessarily happen, but there is a chance that it might. Your doctor will also check whether the membranes surrounding the fetus have ruptured. If they have, and your cervix is dilated, then a miscarriage is certain.

If you have passed tissue, your doctor may suspect that a miscarriage has already occurred. If the tissue is available, he or she may be able to examine it to see whether it contains any fetal tissue or is actually a clot or a piece of placenta. An ultrasound exam is often used to try to determine whether there is a live fetus inside the uterus.

With this test, your doctor will try to see the sac that surrounds the fetus or, using a special kind of ultrasonography, check the fetal heartbeat. If the fetus is not alive but has not been passed out of your body, this is called a missed abortion.
What's theTreatment for Miscarriage?

In cases of threatened abortion, bed rest and pain medication may be prescribed until the bleeding or pain has passed. If bleeding or pain is severe, you may need to be hospitalized. When the fetal membranes have broken, a miscarriage often occurs soon afterward. If it doesn't, however, and there is continued bleeding, pain, or a fever, the mother is at risk for developing a serious infection.

Because of this, the fetal tissue must be removed from the uterus. In this procedure, which is done under anesthesia, the cervix is gradually dilated and the tissue is gently scraped or suctioned out.

If you have had a miscarriage or a procedure to empty the uterus, call your doctor right away if you have signs of miscarriage such as heavy bleeding, fever, chills, or severe pain. These could be a sign of an infection.
What About Pregnancy After Miscarriage?

Most women who have had a miscarriage go on to have successful pregnancies in the future. Women with repeated miscarriages (three or more in a row) have a 70 to 85 percent chance of carrying another pregnancy to term. It is usually advised, however, to wait awhile before becoming pregnant again. Your care provider will be able to give you advice as to when to attempt pregnancy after a miscarriage.

Often animals, including venomous snakes, have formed the basis for various homeopathic remedies. The homeopathic medicine elaps is one such remedy which is prepared from the venom of coral snake - as New World poisonous snakes are known as. In fact, they belong to the same family as the cobras of the Old World poisonous snakes. This medicine was first introduced into homeopathy by Dr Benoît Jules Mure.

Approximately 30 dissimilar species of coral snakes are found in Central America, North and South America and Mexico. Two species of coral snakes inhabit the United States. The eastern coral snake (scientific name Micrurus fulvius), also called harlequin snake, inhabits the south-eastern regions of the United States and northern Mexico. This species of coral snake is basically a burrowing snake having a petite, rounded head and a cylinder-shaped body. On an average, it is around 75 cm or 2 ½ feet long. The body of the eastern coral snake has alternate black, red and occasionally yellow rings, while the tail portion only has black and yellow circular stripes. On the other hand, the Sonoran (scientific name Micruroides euryxanthus), also called the Western coral snake, is somewhat an exceptional species found inhabiting south-western regions of the United States and north-western Mexico. Compared to the eastern coral snake, this rare species is smaller in size and normally has a length of 45 cm or 18 inches. In addition, the body of the Western coral snake has broader circular yellow rings compared to the Eastern coral snake.

There are several harmless snakes that have colors similar to the coral snakes. Nevertheless, it is possible to differentiate the coral snakes owing to the fact that this is the only snake species that has alternate red and yellow bands circling its body. Similar to the poison of the cobras, venom of the coral snakes also works on the nervous system resulting in paralysis. Most people who are bitten by the coral snakes succumb to its poison - making the mortality rate high. The bite of the coral snake is similar to that of any other colubrine. The part where this snake sinks its teeth into becomes swollen, painful and discoloured. Snakes are reptiles and all of them are without limbs. The body of all snakes is scaled and these predators have a carnivorous diet. In fact, relatively only a small number of snakes are venomous and almost all medicines that are derived from snakes come of the limbless reptiles belonging to the venomous group. To be precise, most of the familiar medicines including Lachesis (the bushmaster), Crotalus horridus and cascavella (the rattlesnakes), Elaps (the coral snake), and Naja (the cobra) come from venomous snakes. Presently, homeopaths are also experimenting as well as using medicines derived from non-venomous snakes like the python.

CHARAKAR, Afghanistan – CHARAKAR, Afghanistan (AP) — The hundreds of patients who flock to Mohammad Sherzad's homeopathic clinic in northern Afghanistan are greeted with a glass case of snakes and a covered glass dish of scorpions.

For decades, Sherzad has been extracting poison from snakes and scorpions, mixing it with natural herbs and using the concoctions to treat people ill with epilepsy and vitiligo, which causes white, depigmented patches on the skin.

Medical facilities are so scarce in this impoverished nation that many Afghans can't find doctors — the country has 1 doctor for every 10,000 people, according to the United Nations. Dozens of homeopathic doctors like Sherzad offer an alternative.

More then 1,800 patients are registered at Sherzad's home clinic in Charakar, the capital of Parwan province. Patients pay an initial fee of about $10 and leave with different capsules, powders and other forms of homeopathic medicines that cost roughly $20 to $30 a month.

Sherzad proudly shows visitors an album of before and after photos of his patients. One shows a young girl with white spots all over her feet. Another, taken later, shows the girl, smiling, her skin color returned to normal.

"I thank God today that this disease (vitiligo) can be cured in Afghanistan," said Sherzad, who never went to medical school, but has written more than 800 pages on the human body. "We can say to the world that we are now able to treat this disease."

Dr. Qasim Sayedi, who directs the health department in Parwan province, is skeptical that Sherzad's treatments really work. The Afghan government does not regulate homeopathic doctors, but does exert some informal oversight. The local health department has asked Sherzad, an Afghan returnee from Iran, to provide documents of his education.

"He had no documents except some video and photos from Iran, that showed him with snakes and scorpions," said Sayedi. Sayedi said he is giving Sherzad enough time to get proper documents, and that Sherzad has promised to go through all the legal steps needed to get a legal license.

Sherzad said his patients' experiences are evidence of his success.

Nelofer, a 21-year-old woman, took a nearly two-hour flight from Herat in western Afghanistan to Kabul and then a 90-minute trip from the Afghan capital to Parwan province to visit Sherzad. She said she had been suffering for nine years from vitiligo, which creates white patches on the hands, face and around the eyes, mouth and nostrils.

"I am hated because of having white spots on my hands," said Nelofer, who said she saw 20 skin experts in Afghanistan and Pakistan before seeking help at Sherzad's clinic.

Nelofer said that over the years the white spots grew larger on her hands and new ones appeared on her feet. She hates appearing in public for fear of being ostracized by others.

"That is bothering me more than anything else — that no one wants to eat with me at the same table," Nelofer said, crying.

In contrast, Nazira, a 34-year-old mother, shed tears of joy, saying that her 9-year-old daughter, who suffered from vitiligo for years, was getting better day by day after seeing Sherzad for the past few months. She says her daughter, Kawsar, no longer feels isolated from other children and plays with her classmates at school.

"I first saw the doctor in a TV show," Nazira said. "I was amazed with his work. Now my daughter is under his treatment."

She said she took her daughter to 10 skin specialists, but got only one answer: They could do nothing.

Extracting poison from a snake or scorpion is delicate, if not hazardous, work, but having done it for more than three decades Sherzad has developed a fondness for his creatures.

"I love them and that is the reason why I look after them," Sherzad said as a gray snake looped around his hand.

Sherzad laid a snake across his lap and squeezed venom from its mouth. He used a syringe to extract poison from the tips of his scorpions' tails, which curve over their backs. He then processes the poison, purifies it to remove harmful substances and then mixes it with herbs found in the mountains.

One of his patients, 11-year-old Mohammad Shafiq, began suffering epilepsy-like seizures after falling from the roof of a house. The boy, dressed in a light blue Afghan traditional shulwar kumuz, saw many doctors and took several medications. Still, his condition didn't improve. He suffered five to six seizures a day. His mother, Sharifa Ahamdi, said that after being under Sherzad's care for two weeks, "life changed" for her son. He could walk and talk better and do a better job feeding himself.

"That was a good sign that his condition was improving," said Shafiq's mother, who was in Sherzad's office to pick up the treatment for the coming months. "You made our life change by treating my son."

This is a new theory which has come to my knowledge very recently and I thought that I should also share with you all.

A few days back my Friends Father in law was admitted in a nursing home due to severe chest pain.

He had an attack in 1997 and was undergoing normal treatment.
