Abraham Lincoln and His Cabinet Appreciated Homeopathic Medicine

Abraham Lincoln and His Cabinet Appreciated Homeopathic Medicine

by: Dana Ullman, MPH

(NaturalNews) Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) showed a special interest in and appreciation for homeopathic medicine. In 1854, before Lincoln was elected president, he was retained as a lawyer to prepare a state legislative proposal to charter a homeopathic medical college in Chicago. Because Chicago was the home of the American Medical Association, which had been founded in 1847 in part to stop the growth of homeopathy, Lincoln's job was no simple effort.

However, many of Chicago's most prominent citizens and politicians participated on the board of trustees of the proposed Hahnemann Medical College, including Chicago's mayor, two congressmen, an Illinois state representative, a Chicago city councilman, the co-founder of Northwestern University, the founder of Chicago Union Railroad, and several medical doctors who were homeopaths (Spiegel and Kavaler, 2002). Despite significant opposition, Lincoln was successful in obtaining a charter for the homeopathic college.

Today, the Pearson Museum at Southern Illinois University has an exhibit of a nineteenth-century doctor's office and drug store; included in this exhibit is a homeopathic medicine kit from the Diller Drug Store of Springfield, Illinois.

The exhibit notes that Abraham Lincoln was a frequent customer of the drug store and a regular user of homeopathic medicines (Karst, 1988, 11).

Lincoln surrounded himself with advocates for homeopathy, especially his most trusted advisor and Secretary of State, William Steward. Ultimately, the story of what happened to William Seward is a classic story in medical history that exemplifies conventional medicine's attitude toward and actions against unconventional medical treatments and the physicians who provide them.

On the night Lincoln was assassinated, Seward was stabbed in the multi-person assassination plot against the Union. Thanks to the medical care provided by Joseph K. Barnes, MD, U.S. Surgeon General, Seward survived. However, because Seward's personal physician was a homeopathic doctor and because the AMA had a policy that it was an ethical violation to consult with a homeopathic doctor or even provide care for a homeopathic patient, Dr. Barnes was denounced by the vice president of the AMA for providing medical care (Haller, 2005, 192).

In addition to choosing Seward to be his secretary of state, several leading advisors were homeopathic advocates. On November 1, 1861, Lincoln appointed Major General George Brinton McClellan (1826-1885) to command the Union army during the Civil War. However, in late December McClellan contracted typhoid fever, which left him unable to go to his office to conduct business (Rafuse, 1997).

During the first week of McClellan's illness, two homeopathic doctors arrived from New York to care for the ill general and his father-in-law and chief of staff, Randolph B. Marcy, who was also ill. McClellan's decision to employ homeopathic doctors is particularly interesting considering the fact that the general came from a family of prominent conventional physicians.

Despite this serious illness, General McClellan remained active, giving regular orders to his subordinates, arranging for troop movement and supply transport, meeting with the president on a weekly basis, issuing court martial orders, and even providing commendations to officers. By January 2, he seemed to be much better and shortly afterwards he had no noticeable physical limitations. McClellan lived another twenty-three years.

Despite the success of this homeopathic treatment on the military leader of the Union army, that very month, January 1862, the Army Medical Board rejected requests by homeopathic doctors to serve in military hospitals, arguing that to grant this request would invite applications from all types of quacks and charlatans claiming medical expertise.

Typhoid fever caused more deaths during the Civil War and the Spanish-American War than the deaths caused by bullets (Wershub, 1967, 175). Despite the fact that homeopathy gained widespread popularity in the United States and Europe due to its successes in treating various infectious disease epidemics of the mid- and late-1800s, including typhoid epidemics (Bradford, 1900; Coulter, 1973), the antagonism against homeopathy and homeopaths led to government regulations stipulating that graduates of homeopathic medical colleges could not receive a commission for military service.

In Connecticut, several "irregular" physicians offered their services to the governor, who accepted them, but the examining board of the Union army rejected them and instead accepted recruits from a hastily graduated class from Yale College.

Although the Union army had strict restrictions against homeopathic physicians, the Confederate army did not. In fact, the physician to the wife of the Confederate army's General Robert E. Lee was a homeopathic doctor, Alfred Hughes, MD (Hughes, 1904, 39). At least in one incidence, General Lee himself was known to have taken homeopathic medicines (Mainwaring and Riley, 2005).

Thankfully, the antagonism toward homeopaths was not as severe during World War I; almost 2,000 homeopathic physicians were commissioned as medical officers. Even the American Red Cross authorized a homeopathic hospital unit (Dearborn, 1923).

Lincoln was also known to appoint some homeopathic physicians to political positions. For instance, in 1863 he appointed Dr. J. G. Hunt, author of a book on homeopathy and surgery (Hill and Hunt, 1855), to be consul to Nicaragua (King, 1905, I, 177).

Lincoln also signed a bill into law that gave the president the authority to make appointments to the Union army's medical department, including homeopaths (Haller, 2005, 187). However, orthodox physicians strongly asserted that they would not work with homeopaths in any way, thus creating new and more difficult problems in military medicine.

Although Lincoln surrounded himself with advocates for homeopathy, that didn't protect the medical science from his famous wit. He once called homeopathy "medicine of a shadow of a pigeon's wing."

On a more serious note, it should also be mentioned that the personal physician to Mary Lincoln (1818-1882) during the later part of her life was a homeopathic physician and surgeon from Chicago, Dr. Willis Danforth. Mary Lincoln was known to have experienced serious bouts of depression after her husband was assassinated and two of her children died, one at age 11 (1862) and the other at 18 (1871).

Mary Lincoln became the sole heir of the Lincoln estate and her extravagant spending and unusual behavior later in life concerned her son Robert so much that in 1874, he sought to get her declared insane and sent to a mental asylum. The testimony of her homeopath, Danforth, confirmed her insanity because he noted that Mrs. Lincoln experienced "nervous derangement" and had delusions.
She was committed to the asylum, but was free to move about the grounds, and was released three months later. Recent research has uncovered strong evidence to suggest that Mary Lincoln also suffered from syphilis, which may help explain her crazed mental state (Hayden, 2003, 120-132).

Discover natural ways to resolve your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual issues.

"Thank you so much - sleep well knowing that your passion in the alternative health field has opened up yet another venue to share the knowledge for healing." - Regina

What is Homeopathy

Although it was first described by Hippocrates 2,500 years ago, Homoeopathy as it is practiced today evolved 200 years ago. The word comes from the Greek and means similar suffering. This refers to the central philosophy that a substance that can produce symptoms in a healthy person - can cure those symptoms in a sick person.

Many people wonder if Homeopathy is safe. The answer is YES. Since these substances are given in minute doses - unwanted side effects are avoided, making them safe to use even in situations where conventional drugs would be dangerous or inadvisable, for example during pregnancy or when treating infants. Join us for an interesting show!

The NaturalNews Talk Hour begins this Thursday evening at 6pm Pacific / 9pm Eastern, and registration is FREE. Simply enter your email address in the registration form on the right column of this page and you'll receive call-in details for the show.

Homeopathy's Role in Childbirth

According to Mary Aspinwall, a registered homeopath, "Constitutional treatment during pregnancy is of enormous benefit to both mother and belly-dweller. It is a great preparation for labor and reduces the likelihood of complications. However, it is also wise for the mother to be prepared and have the main acute remedies on hand at least two or three weeks before the due date and to encourage her birth assistant to read through information about the remedies well before labor starts."

Our next guest Mary Aspinwall uses many different homeopathic remedies for women - depending on their pregnancy concerns. For example, anxiety is a common experience prior to the birthing experience and Aconite 200 plus Gelsemium 200 can be very helpful. Gelsemium 200 can also be useful for weak or slow contractions. We'll talk to Mary about allergy solutions, pain relief, vaccine substitutes plus much more!

Guideline for reimbursement of expense on Ayurvedic & Homeopathic Treatment in Indian Arm Forces

Union to frame guidelines on reimbursement of expense on Ayurvedic treatment
05.08.2011 | 11:07
New Delhi
Garima Tyagi

India may be famous worldwide for Ayurveda but the defence forces would not recognise its healing powers. The result - defence forces would not reimburse defence personnel for availing such treatment. This became an issue in a petition filed before the High Court of Delhi recently.

The division bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Sanjiv Khanna hearing the petition, directed the Centre to frame guidelines for compensation to defence personnel who wished to avail treatment under Ayurvedic or Homeopathic system of medicine.

The court also directed the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to frame guidelines relating to medical treatment and reimbursement within three months in consultation with the heads of all three defence forces.

Petitioner Rajesh Srivastava, a social worker filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before Delhi High Court seeking such directions. Advocate Arjun Harkauli appearing for petitioner pointed out a case of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, where an NSG commando injured seriously and is now on medical advise to get Ayurvedic treatment for his survival, but defence force denied monthly reimbursement of Rs. 4000 for his Ayurvedic treatment.

The petition stated, “The national policy on Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy 2002 recognized the alternative medicines which are helpful for certain diseases but the defence forces refuse reimbursement for the treatment of any personnel through such alternative therapies.”

The petition also submitted that it is arbitrary that while the central government promotes Ayurveda, Siddha and Homeopathy as legitimate form of medicine, the defence forces do not recognise such systems of medicine despite its proven curative capacity and scientific basis.

Insomania Can be Cured With Homeopathy

Naps, commonly discouraged with insomnia, can be extremely beneficial if they are regularly scheduled events, restricted to a single, brief “power nap” during midday.

The nap period should not exceed 20 minutes, even if actual sleep is not achieved during this time. Naps should be a scheduled part of the daily routine, best taken after lunch or sometime in the early afternoon.

Nap breaks can be extremely refreshing, improving alertness, enhancing job performance, and increasing energy without resetting the circadian rhythm or disrupting the nighttime sleep pattern.

The napping process also provides the nervous system with practice in the art of relaxing. This exercise helps in calming the mind whether or not sleep is actually achieved. Naps can help the body relearn the art of sleeping.

Classical Homeopathic Medicine. Once the hygienic factors are addressed, classical homeopathic medicine (CHM) can be extremely helpful in permanently resolving insomnia. Since CHM does not involve the use of drugs, chemicals, or herbs, it usually doesn’t interfere with or worsen sleep disturbances or lead to rebound or withdrawal symptoms when it is stopped.

Neuralgia

Neuralgia is pain in one or more nerves that occurs without stimulation of pain receptor (nociceptor) cells. Neuralgia pain is produced by a change in neurological structure or function rather than by the excitation of pain receptors that causes nociceptive pain. Neuralgia falls into two categories: central neuralgia and peripheral neuralgia.

This unusual pain is thought to be linked to four possible mechanisms: ion gate malfunctions; the nerve becomes mechanically sensitive and creates an ectopic signal; cross signals between large and small fibers; and malfunction due to damage in the central processor.

Styes and Chalazia @ Ketimbir

Ketimbir

Styes and Chalazia
What are styes and chalazia?

Styes and chalazia are lumps in or along the edge of an eyelid. They may be painful or annoying, but they are rarely serious. Most will go away on their own without treatment.

* A stye camera is an infection that causes a tender red lump on the eyelid. Most styes occur along the edge of the eyelid. When a stye occurs inside the eyelid, it is called an internal hordeolum (say "hor-dee-OH-lum").
* A chalazion camera (say "kuh-LAY-zee-on") is a lump in the eyelid. Chalazia (plural) may look like styes, but they are usually larger and may not be painful.

Styes and chalazia may be related to blepharitis, a common problem that causes inflammation of the eyelids.
What causes a stye or chalazion?

Styes are caused by a bacterial infection. Usually the bacteria grow in the root (follicle) of an eyelash. An internal hordeolum is caused by infection in one of the tiny oil glands inside the eyelid.

A chalazion develops when an oil gland in the eyelid becomes blocked. If an internal hordeolum doesn't drain and heal, it can turn into a chalazion.
What are the symptoms?

A stye usually starts as a red bump that looks like a pimple along the edge of the eyelid.

* As the stye grows, the eyelid becomes swollen and painful, and the eye may water.
* Most styes swell for about 3 days before they break open and drain.
* Styes usually heal in about a week.

A chalazion forms a firm lump or cyst under the skin of the eyelid.

* Chalazia grow more slowly than styes. If a chalazion gets large enough, it may interfere with vision.
* The inflammation and swelling may spread to the area surrounding the eye.
* Chalazia often go away in a few months without treatment.

Homeopathic treatment

There are tow specific homeopathic medication for styes, Sramonium and Pulsatiilla are considered as the best remedies.

A Testimonial From A Patient

Mr Zuhaidi Hassan Recrd no. 5495

A Brief report By Mr Zuhaidi Hassan

7 August 2006 - I suffered from massive heart attack and was admitted to Intensive Care Unit at private Medical Centre at Kuala Lumpur.

12 August I underwent heart bypass operation - 2 grafts. Due to heart attack, blood clot was formed in the heart. Blood clot travelled to the right leg and broke into smaller pieces. As not enough blood reached the tip of the right foot, the right big toe and the small toes turned black and doctor diagnosed as gangrene.

The worst affected was the right big toe become black, painful, hard producing smelling discharge.

16 December 2007 - The gangrenous right big toe dropped off by itself. The exposed toe was very smelly, produced discharge and very painful.

My private doctor suggest for operation and remove the toe. My blood sugar at that time was 21 mmol. The wound cannot heal and only solution was amputation of the big toe which I refused !

March 2008 - I search for alternative treatment and see Prof Dr Nik Omar , one of homeopathic specialist in Kuala Lumpur for treatment and he gave me some tiny pill for two months

June 2009 - The pain foul smell and discharge are gone. The gangrenous toe was completely dry, no more pain and no more smelly. 3 month later I gangrene was completely cured.

It took 1 year 3 months to heal completely.

"Thanks to the great Prof Dr Nik Omar, I still have my right toe", said Mr Zuhaidi from RHB Bank Kuala Lumpur.

If without homeopathic treatment, I think my toe definitely will be removed completely.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - CFS

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Symptoms

Diagnosing CFS requires ruling out other causes of chronic persistent fatigue, including a stressful lifestyle, cancer, or other illness such as adrenal or thyroid disorders, HIV, or AIDS. Since there are no laboratory tests that specifically make the diagnosis of CFS, the diagnosis is based on symptoms. People with CFS experience the following symptoms:

* Fatigue: People with CFS have long-term fatigue (lasting longer than 6 months to a year) that cannot be explained by other diseases. People with CFS may have had a previous infection. They are tired and "run down" during the infection, and the fatigue continues after the person has recovered from the illness.

* Cognitive difficulties: A typical complaint of people with CFS is that they have problems with short-term memory but not long-term memory. People with CFS may have problems finding or saying a particular word during normal speech (called dysnomia or verbal dyslexia).

* Postexertional fatigue: Postexertional fatigue may also be a problem for people with CFS. They are excessively tired after doing normal activities that were not difficult in the past.

* Fatigue after sleep: People with CFS also complain of fatigue even after long periods of rest or sleep. They do not feel refreshed after sleeping.

* Depression: People with CFS may become depressed because of difficulties performing at work or home, but depression does not cause CFS.

* Other symptoms that may be seen include headaches, muscle aches, sore throat, and even mild fever.

When to Seek Medical Care

People seek medical care when the fatigue and cognitive difficulties of chronic fatigue syndrome affect their quality of life. People who have questions about a particular treatment should contact a qualified health-care provider, local medical society, or university medical school for additional information.

Questions to Ask the Doctor

Because the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is unknown, there is no established treatment to cure CFS. Treatment is aimed at relieving symptoms, and some proposed treatments are unproven and may be harmful. Always ask your doctor about any new treatment, including herbal supplements.

Good Homeopathic remedies for CFS

Aconite., Cham., Arnica., Calc carb., Alfafa., Ginseng, China Off.

Shingles - Kayap

Shingles: An acute infection caused by the herpes zoster virus, the same virus as causes chickenpox. Shingles is most common after the age of 50 and the risk rises with advancing age. Shingles occurs because of exposure to chickenpox or reactivation of the herpes zoster virus. The virus remains latent (dormant) in nerve roots for many years following chickenpox.

Shingles is an extraordinarily painful condition that involves inflammation of sensory nerves. It causes numbness, itching or pain followed by the appearance of clusters of littles blisters in a strip pattern on one side of the body. The pain can persist for weeks, months or years after the rash heals and is then known as post-herpetic neuralgia.

People with shingles are contagious to persons who have not had chickenpox and can catch chickenpox from close contact with a person who has shingles. Treatment includes antiviral medication and pain medication.

The term shingles has nothing to do with a shingle on a roof or the small signboard outside the office of a doctor but is derived from the Latin cingulum meaning girdle, the idea being that shingles often girdles part of the body.

Homeopathic medication

During epidemic - use Morbillium 200 once daily
Aconite with fever. Puls if aggravated with cough; Gels in suppressed eruption; Bryonia when dry hacking coug, suppressed eruption.
Other useful remedies: ver ver., Ars., Anti Tart., Bell., Sulphur

Gonorrhoea Symptoms

Gonorrhea Symptoms

Symptoms may appear within 2 to 10 days after exposure to an infected person-even longer for women (up to 3 weeks).

Gonorrhea Symptoms in Women

* It is important to note that infected women have no symptoms in 30% to 40% of cases. Thus it is possible to be infected with gonorrhea and not know about the infection.

* Gonorrhea may cause pelvic inflammatory disease (a serious medical condition that can lead to infertility).

* Infection and irritation of the cervix

* The need to urinate often

* Itching and burning of the vagina, usually with a thick yellow/green discharge

* Infection and irritation of the vagina (this is how the infection usually appears in children who may be victims of incest)

* Bleeding between menstrual periods

Gonorrhea Symptoms in Men

* Pain or burning during urination in most men

* Thick, yellow penile discharge 50% of the time

* Inflammation or infection of a duct in the testicles

*

Infection or inflammation of the prostate gland

Gonorrhea Symptoms in Newborns

* Irritation of the mucous membranes in the eyes (if not treated, can cause blindness)

Oral and Rectal Gonorrhea Symptoms

* Gonococcal throat infection should be considered in people who complain of sore throat and have other signs of gonococcal infection. Throat infections from gonorrhea are transmitted through oral sex, but occur without any other symptoms in less than 5% of individuals infected with gonorrhea.

* Rectal pain or discharge can be a sign of infection of the prostate and is transmitted through anal intercourse.

Homeopathic Medication For Gonorrhoea

Aconite, Medorrdinum, Thuja, Merc Cor., Merc Sol., Cann Sat., Ac Nit

Female Sexual Problems

Female Sexual Problems Causes

The causes of sexual problems are as varied and complex as the human race. Some problems stem from a simple, reversible physical problem. Others can stem from more serious medical conditions, difficult life situations, or emotional problems. Still others have a combination of causes. Any of the following can contribute to sexual problems:

* Relationship problems - Discord in other aspects of the relationship, such as distribution of labor, childrearing, or money, can cause sexual problems. Issues of control or even abuse in the relationship are especially harmful to sexual harmony. Such problems can prevent a woman from communicating her sexual wants and needs to her partner.

* Emotional problems - Depression, anxiety (about sex or other things), stress, resentment, and guilt can all affect a woman's sexual function.

* Insufficient stimulation - A woman's (or her partner's) lack of knowledge about sexual stimulation and response may prevent a woman from achieving a satisfactory experience. Poor communication between partners can also be a culprit here.

* Gynecologic problems - A number of pelvic disorders can cause pain in intercourse and thus decrease satisfaction.

o Vaginal dryness - The most common reason for this in younger women is insufficient stimulation. In older women, the decrease in estrogen that occurs in menopause is the cause of vaginal dryness. Poor lubrication can also be linked to hormone imbalances and other illnesses and to certain medications. It can inhibit arousal or make intercourse uncomfortable.

o Vaginismus - This is a painful spasm of the muscles surrounding the vaginal opening that causes the vaginal opening to "tighten." It can prevent penetration or make penetration extremely painful. Vaginismus can be caused by injuries or scars from surgery, abuse, or childbirth, by infection, or by irritation from douches, spermicides, or condoms. It can also be caused by fear.

o Sexually transmitted diseases - Gonorrhea, herpes, genital warts, chlamydia, and syphilis are infectious diseases spread by sexual contact. They can cause changes in the genitals that make sex uncomfortable or even painful.

o Vaginitis - Inflammation and irritation of vaginal tissues due to infection or other causes can make intercourse uncomfortable or painful.

o Endometriosis, pelvic mass, ovarian cyst, surgical scars - Any of these can cause an obstruction that prevents intercourse or makes it difficult or painful.

o Pelvic inflammatory disease - This is an infection of the vagina that moves up into the cervix, uterus, and ovaries. It can be very painful on its own and make intercourse extremely painful.

o Nerve damage after surgery - Unavoidable cutting of small nerves during pelvic surgery (such as hysterectomy) may decrease sensation and response.

* Physical conditions - Many physical or medical conditions can decrease a woman's satisfaction with her sex life.

o Tiredness (fatigue)

o Chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease

o Cancer

o Neurologic disorders

o Vascular (blood flow) disorders

o Hormonal imbalances

o Menopause

o Pregnancy

o Alcohol or drug abuse

* Medications - Certain medications can reduce desire or arousal. One well-known group of drugs that have this effect are the selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) group of antidepressants, which includes drugs such as Prozac and Zoloft. Others include certain chemotherapy drugs, drugs for high blood pressure, and antipsychotic medications.

* Other medical treatments - Treatments such as radiation therapy for certain types of cancer can reduce vaginal lubrication. They can also make skin and the membranes lining the genitals tender and sensitive.

* History of abuse - A woman who has suffered sexual or other abuse may have trouble trusting her partner enough to relax and become aroused. She may have feelings of fear, guilt, or resentment that get in the way of a satisfactory experience, even if she cares deeply about her current partner.

* Attitudes toward sex - Many people, either because of the way they were brought up or because of earlier bad experiences, don't view sex as a normal and enjoyable part of a couple's relationship. They may associate sex or sexual feelings with shame, guilt, fear, or anger. On the other hand are people who have unrealistic expectations about sex. Portrayals of sex in television and movies as always easy and fantastic mislead some people into believing that is how it is in real life. These people are disappointed or even distressed when sex is sometimes not earth-shattering or when a problem occurs.

* Sexual problems of the partner - If a woman's partner has sexual problems, such as impotence or lack of desire, this can inhibit her own satisfaction.

If you're like everyone else you're trying to figure out what the signs of pregnancy or pregnancy symptoms are and how likely they are to mean that you are pregnant. You can ask other people, you can worry in silence, but the best thing is to read through the categories and add up the signs. The more you have the more likely you are to be pregnant.

On the chart below are 25 of the most common signs of pregnancy and what they mean. You can also click the sign to get more information on each sign of pregnancy. The three categories of pregnancy signs are: possible, probable and positive.
